Nazareno signed and dated 1978 (lower right) oil on canvas 48” x 96” (122 cm x 244 cm) WRITE UP Hugo Yonzon, Jr’s Nazareno captures in its canvas one of the most awaited religious events in the country. The procession of the Black Nazarene brings many pious Filipinos onto the streets of Quiapo, watching amongst the sea of devotees as the life-sized statue of Jesus Christ is paraded in the six-kilometer distance between the Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo church Melding both the realist and the modernist art styles, his oeuvre features a myriad of styles to the point that his son Boboy Yonzon said in a 2014 Philstar article titled My Daddy Groovy, Hugo Yonzon, the cool painter: “My dad’s friends said that Hugo was an artist looking for style, that when you saw his works you would think that you were looking at a group show.” And yet, despite this dissonance, Yonzon’s works are bound together by a commonality – his penchant for depicting the Filipino masses. His Nazareno touches upon an important point in Filipino culture: religion. With the Philippines as Asia’s largest Catholic-majority country, the religious holidays are celebrated with intense devotion, with the record of the six-kilometer Nazarene procession reaching 22 hours. It is a practice deeply embedded in the Philippine psyche and it is translated visually as eagle-eyed viewers will notice Yonzon's usage of red, blue, and yellow of the Philippine flag, effectively intertwining the country and the church in a masterful analysis of the Philippines' longstanding history with religion. Hugo Yonzon, Jr. (1924 - 1994) - Boats

        Est: ₱100,000 - ₱130,000

Boats signed and dated 1959 (lower right) oil on masonite board 22" x 28" (56 cm x 71 cm) EXHIBITED: Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) 12th Annual Exhibition and Competition, 1959 WRITE UP: Hugo Yonzon, Jr.’s Boats was the artist’s entry to the 12th Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Exhibition and Competition in 1959, the same event where Joya’s now-legendary Space Transfiguration bagged the second prize. In this piece, the titular boats are rendered starkly, veering towards an almost geometric manner and towards abstraction. Before venturing into painting, Yonzon, Jr. was an accomplished cartoonist; he was the brain behind the popular cartoon strips of his time, “Sakay” and “Moy,” published in The Manila Times. He had also won the first prize for caricature at the 1951 AAP Annual and another 1st prize, this time for photography, at the 1953 iteration. As the 1950s progressed, Yonzon, Jr. slowly transitioned into painting, reaching his flowering as a full-fledged painter in the 7th AAP Annual in 1954, where he won the coveted 1st prize for modern painting for his piece Harana. The eminent Fernando Zóbel, writing in his article “The Seventh Annual AAP Art Exhibition,” published in the Philippine Studies journal, notes that in that year’s Annual, “the most interesting work came from comparative newcomers.” He would then cite Yonzon, Jr.’s award-winning work as deserving of its accolade. In the same article, Zóbel describes Yonzon, Jr.’s work as reminiscent of Luz “in its use of a linear, basically geometrical composition” and of Manansala’s technique, “particularly in the dramatic use of dark color—also a fitting description for 1959’s Boats. In addition, Yonzon, Jr.’s emphasis on texture through his employment of seemingly vibrating patches of colors palpably appeals to the tactile imagination. (Adrian Maranan)

Hugo Yonzon, Jr. (1924 - 1994) Barong-Barong signed (lower right) oil on canvas 16 1/2" x 22" (42 cm x 56 cm) PROPERTY FROM THE JOSE ZAIDE COLLECTION The image of the barong-barong is a staple in the foremost modernist Hugo Yonzon Jr.’s early works. In this particular piece from his early period, the artist captures a vignette of slum living, akin to a colorful illustration emerging from a cartoon strip (Yonzon Jr. initially worked as a cartoonist and illustrator). Albeit depicting a more modest subject, this piece is reminiscent of Yonzon Jr.’s entry to the Seventh Annual Art Association of the Philippines Exhibition in 1954 titled Harana, which won the coveted first prize. Although Yonzon Jr. does not venture into explicit narratives in this piece, one can discern the artist’s intended reactions on the viewer through his masterful weaving of disarrayed forms, creating a composition that evokes poverty and induces feelings of sympathy. Rendered in dark tones, strips of shanties dominate the canvas. The crudely built houses are set against a backdrop of patchworks of contrasting colors, resembling tattered clothes, thus, bizarrely complementing the subject. (A.M.)

During this time, a brash, new breed of artists would spawn an avant-garde style embedded into the Filipino consciousness—thus, Neo-Realism was born. The ravages of the Second World War also brought an iconoclastic attitude towards the academicism in Philippine art that pervaded the preceding decades. This practice was first undertaken by six artists whose names were closely associated with the early years of the Philippine Art Gallery (PAG): Romeo Tabuena, Hernando R. Ocampo, Vicente Manansala, Victor Oteyza, Ramon Estella, and Cesar Legaspi. From the first generation, a second one emerged. Hugo Yonzon Jr. belonged to that younger cohort, which also included Arturo Luz, Mauro Malang Santos, Jose Joya, and Ang Kiukok. According to the Philippine Center New York, the neo-realist approach to genre scenes in solid but graceful, overlapping geometric forms became Yonzon's preferred style. A rare triptych by Yonzon and one of his early forays into Neo-Realism, the artist painted this piece after winning the First Prize in modern painting at the Art Association of the Philippines' (AAP) 7th annual exhibition in 1954. According to Santiago Albano Pilar, this work is highly significant in the annals of Philippine modern art, for "it was painted in the first authentically Filipino artistic expression, Neo-Realism." This piece reflects Yonzon's Filipino sensibility. Yonzon captures the struggle of the Filipinos towards recovery and rehabilitation associated with the post-war period. The figures are blatantly contorted, signifying the people's anguish and the social turmoil that ensued from the ravages of the war. Emmanuel Torres writes in Art Philippines: "They [the NeoRealists] saw the need to portray life's tensions and conflicts, like the horror and devastation of the recent war…painting Amorsolo-like pastoral visions of the Philippine countryside had reached a dead end." Amid the chaos and disorientation, they continue with their everyday affairs, whether in recreation or toiling. The figures' skin tones are rendered in deep browns, evoking the Filipinos' kayumanggi complexion. Yonzon employs deeply saturated colors, which Albano Pilar referred to as contrasting "with the harmoniously lame pleasantness or sweetness of the Amorsolo palette." The colors are discernibly rich and bold, symbolizing the people's confidence and optimism—their collective faith in the promise of rebirth and renewal under the banner of independence and self-determination. With this piece, Yonzon makes a statement—we Filipinos are never to be subjugated and enslaved again. (A.M.)

Yonzon would often join both realist modernist competitions held by the Art Association of the Philippines, winning prizes for both. Yonzon’s subjects would also often revolve around a variety of local themes. As he shifted back and forth between different approaches, what remains constant is his subject matter, from the everyday people to those parts of Philippine myths and history. This particular piece features one of the country’s most enduring mythological figures, Malakas and Maganda. Yonzon, Jr.’s dynamic figures give the piece a sense of depth that effectively engages with the viewer. While in exile, Aguinaldo made preparations for the continuation of the Philippine Revolution. Upon returning to his country, Aguinaldo reconstituted the Philippine Revolutionary Army and engaged in one of the fiercest battles for independence, facing a garrison of more than 270 Spanish troops under the command of General Leopoldo García Peña in Alapan in present-day Imus, Cavite. Armed with bamboo cannons and Mauser rifles, the Filipino forces emerged victorious from the battle, despite heavy resistance from the Spanish troops who ran out of ammunition in battle and eventually surrendered. The battle lasted for five hours, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. After the battle, Aguinaldo and the katipuneros marched to Cavite, bringing with them 300 Spanish captives, including General García Peña. Aguinaldo then unfurled what was to become the national flag of the First Philippine Republic. Hugo Yonzon Jr. is remembered as one of the most prolific modernists of the postwar era. Yonzon would often join both realist modernist competitions held by the Art Association of the Philippines, winning prizes for both. Yonzon’s subjects would also often revolve around a variety of local themes. Hugo Yonzon Jr. (1924 - 1994) Vendors signed and dated 1991 (lower right) oil on canvas 36” x 96” (91 cm x 244 cm)   Provenance: Private Collection, Manila    WRITE UP: Throughout postwar modernist painter Hugo Yonzon Jr.’s prolific artistic career, he did not stick to one particular genre, medium, style, and subject. One can see his versatility as one studies his oeuvre, also how years of working in the advertising field developed his draftsmanship and artistic discipline; Yonzon is known for being at ease with various styles and techniques, hence producing works that cater to all kinds of collectors’ preferences. The artist also credited Cesar Legaspi for teaching him the tangents in composition and acknowledged the National Artist’s influence in his craft. Yonzon’s masterpieces are mostly in oil, his preferred medium. He showcases a representational style with traces of cubist leanings in his constant depictions of everyday people, from fishermen to vendors, as well as historical and mythical scenes. In Vendors, ordinary people selling fish and tropical produce are presented through his distinct stylized figuration and textured composition. It has an illustrative and narrative quality as well as colors that complement traces of cubist folds.

Hugo Yonzon Jr. (1924 - 1994) Intramuros signed and dated 1980 (lower right) 24” x 30” (61 cm x 76 cm) The oeuvre of Hugo Yonzon Jr. is not categorized in phases; he is a highly versatile artist who went back and forth between media, styles, and subject matters. His most preferred medium is oil, which he used in most of his works spanning from 1948 to 1994. The constancy of depicting everyday people, from farmers and fishermen to karetela drivers and vendors, marks his works. One of the major postwar Modernist painters in the country, Yonzon Jr. also worked in advertising agencies and illustrated for newspapers and other publications. This 1980 oil painting exhibits his signature Cubistic folds and genius application of thin oil paint as he renders the grandeur of Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, the country’s Historic Walled City. The sunlit sky, the trees with leaves fading into the branches and the background, and the kutsero (kalesa driver) heading out are among the remarkable features in this piece.

Hugo Yonzon Jr. (1924 - 1994) Chinese-Filipino Barter Trade signed and dated 1994 (lower right) oil on canvas PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN The great Filipino painter Hugo Yonzon Jr. explored a variety of art styles throughout his evolution as an artist. As he shifted back and forth between different approaches, what remains constant is his subject matter, from the everyday people to those part of Philippine myths and history. One of the major postwar Filipino modernists, Yonzon also depicts significant historical events and scenes in the country. Here, he gives a representation of the barter trade as an early economic system during the early days and the relationship of the Filipinos and the Chinese recorded in history. Most of his works are in oil, his most preferred medium as a visual storyteller. This work is a great example of Yonzon’s masterful techniques and the naturalness of the narrative quality of his rendered imagery. Coloration is also distinct here, and the features of his figures are stylistically detailed. Estimate in USD $6000-$7800

It is said that he did not exhibit more often than his peers; collectors would buy his paintings as fast as he could finish them. Influenced by National Artist Cesar Legaspi, Yonzon said that Legaspi taught him “the tangents in composition.” This piece is part of his earlier body of works that features darker colors and his refined cubist techniques.
