Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Japanese Block Print Moonlight Patrol Saitō Toshimitsu, from the series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon

    Est: -

Condition: Minor marks on frame Item Description **Tsukioka Yoshitoshi: Moonlight Patrol - Saitō Toshimitsu from One Hundred Aspects of the Moon This exquisite woodblock print, titled "Moonlight Scouting Patrol: Saitō Toshimitsu," is part of the renowned collection *Tsuki hyakushi* (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon) by the esteemed ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Created by his student, Toshikage, this print serves as a memorial portrait of the ill-fated warrior Saitō Toshimitsu, also known as Saitō Kuranosuke Toshimitsu, who was historically a retainer of the Saito family in Mino Province The *Tsuki hyakushi* series, published in batches by Akiyama Buemon between 1885 and 1892, comprises 100 striking nishiki-e (multicolored woodblock prints) that celebrate various aspects of the moon. Each print draws on rich Japanese and Chinese anecdotes, historical events, and mythology, encompassing a diverse array of subjects, including famous warriors, notable women, animals, and supernatural beings. This particular print captures the essence of Toshimitsu, highlighting his valor and tragic fate under the enchanting glow of the moonlight The collection is contained within a folding book that includes all 100 prints along with two indexes compiled after the series' completion. While the prints were released in a specific order, scholars suggest that the arrangement in the album reflects the order in the indexes rather than their original publication sequence, with some variations Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, a prominent figure in the ukiyo-e movement and a disciple of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced an extensive range of artworks throughout his career, including bijin-ga (images of beautiful women) and fuzoku-ga (depictions of manners and customs). This series, completed in the year of Yoshitoshi's passing, is celebrated as a pinnacle of his artistic achievement, showcasing his mastery and innovative approach to the traditional woodblock print medium In "Moonlight Scouting Patrol: Saitō Toshimitsu," viewers are invited to reflect on the historical significance and cultural depth of Yoshitoshi's work, as well as the poignant story of Saitō Toshimitsu, who remains a symbol of loyalty and tragic heroism within the rich tapestry of Japanese history.
