HAIZAN YOSHITSUGU (1846-1915)吉嗣拜山 墨色花卉兩幅Ink on paper, 12.1" x 8.3" — 30.8 x 21.2 cm.Provenance:Property from the Estates of James Bisback and Jonny KalischJames Bisback及Jonny Kalisch遺產Note:Born in Dazaifu on the island of Kyushu, Yoshitsugu studied calligraphy with Tanso Hirose and later studied painting with Koseki Nakanishi. Known as ‘left hand Haizan’ because he lost his right hand in the 1871 earthquake. The accident created a dramatic change in his compositions. While a certain sensitivity and ability to paint details was lost, his paintings developed a certain stylish strength.
