The woman with white dress dotted with rosebuds and red sash; the man with blue coat, yellow vest, and holding a wine glass. A candlestand between them with turned column and bordered with an eight-pointed star in each upper corner. Corner block frame, 13.75"h., 11.5"w. Sold Sotheby's (New York), Sale #1066, lot 298. Ink and watercolor on paper birth certificate of the "single woman" type by Reverend Henry Young, formerly known as the Centre County Artist (see The Rainbow, Quarterly of the Pennsylvania German Society Fall, 1977). Vibrant depiction of a woman in red dress with hair comb, earrings, and basket. Standing side profile and holding a bouquet of flowers, flanked by birds, tulips, fanciful roses, and stars. Notation at the top reads: "Miss Mary Sibella Ort a daughter of Mr. Henry Ort and his wife Hannah born a Miller was born September 7, 1847 in Perry Township, Mifflin County State of Pennsylvania." 11.375"h. 8.75"w. Frame has good, original flame grain paint, 15"h. 11.75"w. Ex Bill Samaha (Ohio/Massachusetts). Sold at Garth's Auctions (Delaware, Ohio), November 26-27, 2004, retaining the label for The Tom & Carolyn Porter Auction.

        DESCRIPTION: Ink and watercolor Fraktur attributed to Henry Young (Pennsylvania, active 1817-1861) for Mary Jane Fry, daughter of Jonas A. and Catharine Fry of Hains [sic] Township, Center County, baptized April 8th, 1852 by Rev. C. Rees. Central wreath of flowers and foliage with bows and star corners executed on lined paper. A nearly identical fraktur was sold by Conestoga Auction Company, lot 220 on June 1, 2013. MEASUREMENTS: 9-5/8" x 7-1/2". Overall with frame 11-7/8" x 9-7/8". CONDITION: Light uniform toning with areas of darker discoloration. 1" tear to upper right edge and 1/4" tear to lower left edge. Minor creasing with small hole and abrasion to lower center.

NOTES Henry Young was active in Center, Columbia, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, Mifflin, Northumberland, Snyder and Union Counties, Pennsylvania. A schoolmaster, unordained minister and farmer, Young is thought to have arrived in Pennsylvania circa 1817. He subsequently appears as a teacher at a union school, Mifflinberg, West Buffalo Township, Northumberland County. Young is known to have been working in several distinct styles, as a result his works have been attributed to several different artists. For another work by Henry Young see lot 723.
