John Young Hunter, Scottish 1874-1955- The Flamenco Dancer; watercolour and bodycolour on paper, signed 'J Young Hunter' (lower left), 74 x 53 cm. ARR. Provenance: The Arthur Ackermann & Peter Johnson Collection. Private Collection, UK. Note: John Young Hunter studied under John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) at the Royal Academy Schools. Young Hunter is best known for his Pre-Raphaelite influenced works, most notably his painting titled 'My Lady's Garden' which is held in the collection of the Tate [N01698]. The present work, on the other hand, which features a dancer clothed in a ruffled gown that seems to swish with the woman's movements, shows the impact of his teacher John Singer Sargent, whose own depictions of flamenco dancers are characterised by similarly elaborate costumes.

John Young-Hunter (1874-1955) "White Horse"

Featured in this lot is this original oil on canvas "White Horse," by John Young-Hunter, born 1874 and passed 1955. The painting features very mild coloration with a light brown and white background; the horse really pops out at you with beautiful shading that eases into the white coloration of the horse wearing a halter with a lead rope attached. The artist's signature can be seen in the bottom right hand corner of the painting. John Young-Hunter is known for his lavish society portraits of wealthy Brits and Americans and for his Native American portraits and genre scenes of the Southwest. John Young-Hunter was born in Glasgow, Scotland to painter Colin Hunter and attended Clifton College and University of London, as well as attended the Royal Academy of Arts in London. John Young-Hunter had been fascinated with American Indians since attending Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a youth in London. In 1912, he met famed western painter Charles M. Russell, and the next year Young-Hunter left for the United States, visiting the Crow Indian Reservation. Subsequently, he was guest of Charles and Nancy Russell, who took him camping in Glacier. The condition of this oil on canvas is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this framed oil on canvas are 22 1/2" x 27" and the visible art measures 14 1/2" x 19".

John Young-Hunter (New Mexico, New York / England, Scotland, 1874 - 1955) Oil/Pastel on Paper Painting of a Young Blonde Beauty Smoking a Cigarette. Signed upper right. Having original Salmagundi Club label verso. 1946 American Watercolor Society Member label verso. His paintings were exhibited in the National Tate Gallery in London and the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. He studied at Clifton College in England and the Royal Academy School as well as the University of London. From 1900 to 1913, he exhibited at the Royal Academy. Cutting his connections to the European art world, he settled in Taos, New Mexico in 1942, and became a part of the colony of artists around Mabel Dodge Luhan. He spent the winters in New York City, completing numerous portrait commissions whose quality was so respected that some persons compared his skills to those of John Singer Sargent. Sight Size: 21.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 29.5 x 22.5 in. Framed behind glass.
