KENNETH YOUNG AMERICAN, WASHINGTON, D.C., 1933-2017 UNTITLED Watercolor on paper Catalogue note: Kenneth Young was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1933. He studied science at the University of Louisville, where he befriended fellow Louisville native Sam Gilliam and switched his focus to art. In 1959, Young won the prestigious University of Louisville Allen R. Hite Scholarship, joining the ranks of previous winners Sam Gilliam and Robert Douglas. 1964 was an important year for Young: he moved to Washington, D.C., staying briefly with former classmate Sam Gilliam, and took a position as an exhibition designer for the Smithsonian institute, a job he would hold for over 30 years. In 1965, six artists from the area - Gene Davis, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Howard Mehring, Thomas Downing and Paul Reed - exhibited at the now-famous exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, cementing the movement known as the "Washington Color School." Young was friends with most of the participants and used similar techniques in his work, painting with diluted acrylics on raw canvas.

YOUNG / $500 This work has been exhibited in two different orientations; one in the direction of the artist's signature, at the Franz Bader Gallery, and one in the direction of the labels. Catalogue Note: Sun Spot - Moon Spots is a transitional piece in the oeuvre of Kenneth Young. The artist has softened the geometric bands seen in his "Riot Series" of 1968 and has introduced the "Orbs" that would define his work in the 1970s. Leslie Young said of her father, "He was all about the physical earth, and space, and things that are beyond--- energy, and how that ties into life and afterlife." Young was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1933. He studied science at the University of Louisville, where he befriended fellow Louisville native Sam Gilliam and switched his focus to art. Kenneth Victor Young (American, 1933-2017) Untitled

      Est: $40,000 - $60,000

circa 1971. Acrylic on cotton canvas. Signed in ink 'Kenneth V. Young' (on the overlap). Kenneth Young and James Weaver met in the late 1960's after Weaver took a position at the collection of musical instruments in the Smithsonian's newly opened National Museum of History & Technology, where Young was working as an exhibition designer, a position he would hold for more than 35 years. Weaver would then become Young's musical accompaniment at his various art exhibitions. Catalogue Note: African American artist Kenneth Young (American, 1933-2017) known for his colorful abstractions in washes of acrylic, which refer to the beauty of the natural world, art historical trends, and the politics of the civil rights era. Born in Kentucky, Young intended to become a scientist, after earning a degree in physics at Indiana University, he enrolled at the University of Louisville with the intention of studying chemical engineering. In Louisville, Young joined the local black artist’s group, where he met Bob Thompson, Sam Gilliam, and Robert Douglas among others. Inspired by the new cultural milieu, Young switched his field of study to painting and graduated with a degree in fine arts. In 1964, Young moved to Washington, D.C. where he began to meet other artists who would come to make up the Washington Color School. His paintings are in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Art. Energy and matter were apt subjects for Young, a young physicist who turned to painting: “I’ve always been interested in… outer space, inner space, and the development of what occurs - force, magnetism, and that kind of thing”.

      Est: $80,000 - $120,000

KENNETH VICTOR YOUNG (1933 - 2017) Untitled (Abstract Composition). Acrylic on cotton canvas, 1972. 2007x2997 mm; 79x118 inches. Signed and dated "72" in ink on the canvas overflap, upper edge verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Washington, DC (1972); private collection, Pittsburgh. This monumental canvas of fiery colors and floating orbs is a wonderful example of the abstract painting of Kenneth Young, the Washington DC color field painter who is regaining national recognition today, and is his largest painting to come to auction. Young was associated in the early 1970s with the rise of the Washington Color School; in 1968, he had a solo exhibition at the Franz Bader Gallery in Washington, DC. Born in Kentucky, Young's career began in the sciences - he studied and taught physics at Indiana University and chemical engineering at the University of Louisville. After moving to Washington, DC, he went on to work at the Smithsonian Institution for over 35 years as an exhibition installation designer. He was also an art instructor at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC. Young also had solo exhibitions at the Carl Van Vechten Gallery at Fisk University in 1973, and at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC in 1974. His paintings have also been included in exhibitions at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery and the Washington Project for the Arts, and are in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Johnson Publishing Company, Chicago, IL.
