Power Litho., New York DESCRIPTION: After the United States declared war on Germany in 1917, Belgian relief director Herbert Hoover was asked by President Wilson what part food would play in the war. His response? “Second only to military action it was the dominant factor.” And so, the United States launched a new campaign to feed the Allies during the European food shortage. And while we all know that the food left on our plates won’t feed those across the ocean, posters like this one provided the practical reminder that food is a valuable resource not to be disregarded.     SIR - DON'T WASTE, DO YOUR SHARE BY WILLIAM CRAWFORD YOUNG ORIGINAL VINTAGE POSTER

    During World War I, posters were an essential way to get information out to the general population. This Original Vintage Poster was designed by William Crawford Young in 1917 for the World War I U.S. Food Administration. The image shows a man dining in a fancy restaurant with the text below encouraging conservation - "Don't Waste while your wife saves, adopt the doctrine of the clean plate." During the year 1917, President Woodrow Wilson created the U.S. Food Administration which operated in each state. The administration was created to conserve and supply the distribution of food during the war, facilitate transport of food, and retain governmental authority over food through voluntary agreements. There were multiple efforts made during the war to conserve food. Hoover stated that "Food, will win the war." With the support of the Council of Defense and other government organizations, he encouraged homeowners to sign pledges testifying to their efforts to conserve food. This resulted in 'Meatless Mondays', 'Porkless Saturdays' and so forth. The Food administration prevailed by combining patriotism and advertising; they so far as to create their own advertising section. We have not been able to locate any information of substance on the artist, William Crawford Young ( 1886 - ?). He was born in Michigan and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Art Academy. He spent his career in the field of illustration of commercial publications. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
