Ren Yu (B. 1945) "Chrysanthemum Petal" Signed middle right. Original Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Although it is native to the forests and gardens of the Far East, the Camellia has long been a favorite in the Western world as well. The first Camellias to be exported from China to England were probably owned by Lord Petre, a collector of rare plants. However, these flowers promptly died when planted in the warm conditions of a greenhouse. Occasionally, sailors from the British East India Company would bring the lovely Camellias home from their exciting voyages to the exotic East. Their tales of manicured gardens and brilliantly hued blossoms dangling pendant-like from forest trees no doubt painted vivid mental pictures for hopeful gardeners and quickened European interest in the elegant flowers. However, it took the enchanting novel La Dame aux Cam?lias to raise the flower to the romantic vogue it so long enjoyed in Europe. This enthralling book, based on a true story, tells the tale of Alphonsine Plessis, a girl loved by both the composer Liszt and the novel's author Dumas. When the young woman, who often wore Camellias in her hair, died at the age of twenty-two, heartbroken mourners covered her grave with her favorite blossom. Soon, Camellias became the rage in Europe and many flower dealers made their fortunes speculating in new species. The Camellia was first introduced in the United States in 1797. Over the years, the blossoms have become just as popular here as they were in Europe. Image Size: 9.25 x 10.75 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 15.75 in.. Unframed (B05668)

Ren Yu (Chinese, B. 1945) "Year of the Ox" Signed lower right. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Lunar New Year Series 32c The Year of the Ox stamp issued January 5, 1997. Dating back to the 27th C. B.C., the Chinese calendar is a combination of symbolism and mathematical complexities. Twelve animals are associated with the calendar -- the rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, serpent, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. During the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220), the Chinese calendar was organized into repeating 12 year cycles, with each year designated by 1 of the 12 animals. The Chinese commonly refer to the year by its animal name -- 1997 was the Year of the Ox. Those born in a given year are said to share that animal's character traits. Thus, people born during the Year of the Ox are strong, proud, eloquent and self-sacrificing. One of the myths surrounding the origins of this system tells of a great race held between the animals for the Heavenly Jade Emperor. The participants were assigned their places in the calendar according to how they finished. The rat finished first while the boar came in last. Image Size: 15.75 x 13.5 in. Ren Yu (Chinese, B. 1945) "Narcissus" Signed middle right. Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. The graceful jonquil with its nodding yellow blooms is a gardener's delight. A slender flower with fragrant, trumpetlike cups, the jonquil is also referred to as a daffodil. Belonging to the genus Narcissus, this elegant flower occurs in many varieties and produces blooms of white, yellow, gold, orange or pink. Although the jonquil is freely hybridized to create various daffodil species, the "true" jonquil is known as Narcissus jonquilla, a native of Spain and Portugal. This species is naturalized in France, Italy and North Africa, and is known for its reedlike stems and small clusters of golden-yellow flowers. Narcissus poeticus is found in southern Europe, and each long stem is topped with a single, sweetly-scented bloom comprising white petals and a yellow cup. The common daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) has the largest blooms of the Narcissus species, and is the ancestor of the large-trumpet horticulture varieties. Image Size: 16.75 x 17.25 in. The very name of this flower conjures images of exquisite corsages adorning elegant evening wear and humid hothouses where, by the efforts of determined horticulturists, exotic plants produce delicate blossoms year-round. In the Orchidaceae family, there are nearly 35,000 species and 800 genera, one of which is the Paphiopedilum or "Lady Slipper." A terrestrial or ground-growing genus with approximately 50 species, Paphiopedilum is native to the warm, moist expanses of eastern Asia and Indonesia. There are as many orchids as there are places for them to grow and they all share one trait in common: their extraordinary beauty. Image Size: 18.5 x 17.25 in. Overall Size: 24.5 x 22 in. Unframed. Ren Yu (B. 1945) "Chinese Rose"

          Est: $200 - $400

Ren Yu (Chinese, B. 1945) "Chinese Rose" Signed lower right. Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. No flower is as steeped in history and legend as the Rose, hailed for centuries as the Queen of Flowers. Today, one can scarcely imagine the great importance ancient civilizations placed in this blossom. The Romans wore the Rose in extravagant garlands and also scattered its petals lavishly on floors and couches. At one grand banquet showers of petals were released from the ceiling in such great quantities that several of the guests suffocated in the fragrant flowers. The Roman's hedonistic use of Roses incensed the early Christians and they would not allow the flower to be brought into their churches. However, within a few years, the Rose returned to their favor and became the emblem of Christian martyrs. Since it commemorates a chaplet of Roses supposedly given by the Virgin Mary to St. Dominick, even the rosary of the Roman Catholic Church originated with the beloved blossom. In fact, the first rosaries were strings of beads actually formed from tightly pressed rose petals. The Rose -- subject of legend and lore -- is as varied as the countries where it can be found. Some of the finest blooms are grown in the United States where few flowers rival the Rose as a favorite blossom. Rich in color, fragrance, and exquisite form, the Rose is the pride and joy of many American gardens. With the first hint of summer, the flowers burst into bloom, each a work of art with nature as its talented artist. Image Size: 18.25 x 19.5 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 22 in. Unframed. (B06740)

Over the years, the blossoms have become just as popular here as they were in Europe. Image Size: 9.25 x 10.75 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 15.75 in. Unframed. (B05685)

Ren Yu (Chinese, B. 1945) "Lion Head Camellias" Signed upper left. Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Proofcard of the China 8fen Lion Head Camellia stamp issued November 10, 1979. Brilliant red flowers characterize the Lion Head Camellia. Among the thickly twisted petals, stamens bunch in small groups, providing golden blotches of color within the deep red blossoms. To the Chinese, the stamens represents hearts, and they call the Lion Head "Nine Hearts and Eighteen Petals." The lovely Lion Head blossoms grow from one of the taller Camellia trees. Like all the Camellia trees, they grow slowly, especially when young. However, when planted in moist, acid, peaty soil, and protected from the wind, a well-grown Camellia reaches approximately ten feet in twenty years. Perhaps these leisurely growing habits add to their longevity, because many Camellias live hundreds of years. In a temple garden, near Kunming, Yunnan's capital, one Camellia tree is reputed to be over three hundred years old and five hundred feet tall. At one time, western gardeners knew nothing of these Chinese beauties. In 1704, Georg Kamel, a Jesuit priest serving in China, discovered the Camellia. There is some doubt that Kamel, whom the flowers were named after, ever brought a Camellia back to Eurpe, but as the trading routes expanded, the treasured flowers found their way to other countries. Today, Camellias similar to the Lion Head, thrive as well in New York greenhouses as they do in California's sun-filled gardens. Image Size: 10.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 20.25 in. Unframed. Ren Yu (B. 1945) "Red Camellias" Signed lower right. Watercolor.
