          This is the first artwork that the artist ever created. Gulumbu Yunupingu, was already a teacher, health worker, and important community translator when she began painting at 56 years of age. The stories she paints, on bark and on larrakitj (ceremonial poles), hark back to her childhood years when her parents told her the traditional Ancestral stories of her Yolgnu heritage. Her father is the clan leader and artist, Munggurraway Yunupingu who was one of the original presenters of the bark petition. Her art is about the entire universe, stars that can be seen by the naked eye as well as everything beyond and before. She believes that the night sky can bring people of all places and times together, in harmony: “There is healing for people,” she said, “when they see beauty.”

The first story is about two sisters called Guthayguthay and Nhayay. Guthayguthay is the elder sister and sits at the biggest fire, she and Nhayay who is the younger sister and has a smaller fire. The elder sister is able to carry bigger firewood than the younger sister who can only carry small firewood. In the olden days these two sisters used to be people, but they turned into stars that sit in the sky under the Milky Way. The second story is about seven sisters who went out in their canoe called Djulpan. During certain seasons they go hunting for food and always come back with different types of food. They come back with turtle, fish, freshwater snakes and also bush foods like yams and berries. They can be seen in the sky of a night, seven stars that come out together. The stars come in the season when the food and berries come out; the stars will travel through the sky during that month until the season is over and they don't come out until the next season.’

Yunupingu painted the sky, the stars, the galaxy, the universe (Garak) at large. While her contemporaries were producing images of their daily lives and experiences – maps, calendars, events – Yunupingu weaved a much grander and more abstract narrative. Her paintings attempt to encompass the entire universe, all that can be seen by eye, and everything that exists beyond our means of perception, the known and unknown, the imaginable and the unimaginable, everything that has lived and died or is yet to come into being; the past, the present, and the future. Through a poetic use of traditional rarrking (crosshatching) Yunupingu creates glowing, swarming constellation of stars. With extraordinary detail and complexity, she paints a network of crossed and overlapping shapes that create a sense of the magnitude of the galaxy. Her dense layering of shapes in varying tones of brown and yellow ochre produces a depth enhanced through the application of white outlines. If we stand back from the magnetism of this swelling cosmos, this optical illusion, we see only the enchantment of the Gan’yu (Stars). Gulumbu Yunupingu was born into a family of tremendous influence and esteem. A member of the highly respected Yunupingu dynasty of North East Arnhem Land, Gulumbu’s father, Munggurrawuy Yunupingu, was a clan leader and artist, her brother Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM, was a leader and activist, while her other brother Mandawuy Yunupingu was a musician and educator. Up to the age of 56, Gulumbu Yunupingu had enjoyed a busy life as a mother, teacher’s aide, health worker, and translator of the Bible into her first language, Gumatj, but she was virtually unknown in the art world. From 2002 until her death in 2012 at age 66, Yunupingu grew to become one of the most revered Indigenous artists in Australia. In the brief decade in which she painted, Yunupingu’s achievements abounded, from her first solo show at Alcaston Gallery in 2004 to a permanent artwork at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and appearances at the Hannover World Expo and the Melbourne Art Fair. Her larrikitj (funeral poles) were included in the Kerry Stokes Larrakitj collection, and she won first prize in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2004. In 2012 a large display of her barks and larrikitj appeared in the exhibition Marking Time at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Buku-Larrngay Mulka, Yirrkala, Northern Territory.

Gulumbu Yunupingu was born into a family of tremendous influence and esteem. A member of the highly respected Yunupingu dynasty of North East Arnhem Land, Gulumbu's father, Munggurrawuy Yunupingu, was a clan leader and artist, her brother Galarrwuy Yunupingu, AM was a leader and activist, while her other brother Mandawuy Yunupingu was a musician and educator. Up to the age of 56, Gulumbu Yunupingu had enjoyed a busy life as a mother, teacher's aid, health worker, and translator of the Bible into her first language, Gumatj, but she was virtually unknown in the art world. From 2002 until her death in 2012 at age 66, Yunupingu grew to become one of the most revered Indigenous artists in Australia. In the brief decade in which she painted, Yunupingu's achievements abounded, from her first solo show at Alcaston Gallery in 2004 to a permanent artwork at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and appearances at the Hannover World Expo, the Melbourne Art Fair. Her larrikitj (funeral poles) were included in the Kerry Stokes Larrakitj collection, and she won first prize in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2004. In 2012 a large display of her barks and larrikitj appeared in the exhibition Marking Time at Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art. LEAH CROSSMAN

This painting refers to but does not specify two "dreamtime" stories which each represent different constellations, that the artist was told by her father when she was a child ... The first story is about two sisters called Guthayguthay and Nhayay. Guthayguthay is the elder sister and sits at the biggest fire ... Nhayay who is the younger sister has a smaller fire. In the olden days these two sisters used to be people, but they turned into stars that sit under the Milky Way. The second story is about seven sisters who went out in their canoe called Djulpan. During certain seasons they go hunting for food and always come back with different types of food. They come back with turtle, fish, freshwater snakes and also bush foods like yams and berries. They can be seen in the night sky, seven stars that come out together ... When she looks at the stars, Gulumbu thinks about the universe, all around, and about every tribe, every colour. In every corner of the world people can look up and see the stars. This is Gulumbu's vision - in her art, she focuses on the link between all people everywhere.' This work was created for the artist's first solo show at Alcaston Gallery immediately after her win in the Telstra Award in 2004.
