Ahmad Khalid Yusof reconfigures traditional calligraphy forms that evokes emotion, applied through fluent movements of the hand. He was fortified by further studies at the High Wycome and Wincester Art School (1965-1969) in the United States, before doing his Masters at the Ohio University in 1976. AHMAD KHALID YUSOF : Alif Ba Ta Series, 1980’s

            Est: RM18,000 - RM30,000

A master at creating a new realm and a solid manisfestation of a dream for escapists, this soothing air-stream like is flawlessly executed to give it that ethereal aura and vision. Ahmad Khalid Yusof has a habitual style of dotting his pieces with khat calligraphy (Islamic calligraphy), sprinkling tendrils and bits of Jawi ornamentally around the artwork, as shown in this quaint masterpiece. At a glance, the sprinkling of khat alphabets may seem like mere decorations, but fusion between colours and calligraphy makes this piece more evocative and striking. After studying art at Winchester School of Art in England, Ahmad continued to enhance his art skills at Ohio State University, USA and completed his studies in 1976. In 1979, he was the founder and president of the Malaysian Artists Association (PPM). He received the Excellence Award after lecturing at ITM School of Art and Design for 19 years, and was part of the National Art Gallery of Kuala Lumpur’s Board of Trustees.

          • Ahmad Khalid Yusof (b. 1934 - 1997) Untitled, 1994
            Jun. 25, 2023

            Ahmad Khalid Yusof (b. 1934 - 1997) Untitled, 1994

            Est: RM25,000 - RM45,000

It was a time of composure and stability for Ahmad Khalid Yusof: He was appointed guest-writer of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 1994; he had settled back into a teaching routine at the Mara Institute of Technology in Shah Alam while continuing to paint at night and during holidays. He was also director of the Shah Alam Gallery, and president of the Malaysian Art Association (MAA). One can find the soothing monochromatic veneer in this Untitled work, the colours are so light and subdued, just like a whisper. An L-shaped lattice of truncated grids make for columns of blue and green and a rust-brown (sepia over blue) patch, with a frontispiece of orange suffusion, with a band of sepia in the middle rung and in two oblong grids on top. It's an ode of praise to one's love, someone close to the heart. The unifying element is the squiggles of cacing-like (worm-like) Jawi calligraphic script from his Alif-Ba-Ta iconography of 1971, the letterings running all over, breaking barriers of space like prayer call of the azan. Ahmad Khalid Yusof is one of the very few Malay artists who somehow eluded the 'mandatory' Mara Institute of Technology (ITM) treadmill, having been educated at the Malayan Teachers College in Kirby, Liverpool, before continuing at the Specialist Teachers Training Institute in Kuala Lumpur. This is a call to faith and perseverance, the triumph of, as a somewhat dull azure-blue clarifies from what is an obfuscating blanket over Ahmad Khalid Yusof’s trademark frittered khat coming out of the thickly encrusted rust-brown smears. The calligraphy is like miniscule microcosms, animated in aerial suspension, crinkling through what can be viewed as a symbolic partial eclipse. Perhaps, this is evocative of a nightmarish phase when his father, Muhammed Yusof Ahmad, was hired by the Japanese in place of his brother Za’aba, to teach Bahasa Malaya at University Tenri in Japan, bringing with him his four children. It was during the war years from 1941 to 1945, and his family suffered not only from ration and discrimination but also abject fear in the dark, as the American bombers pounded Japan. Such is the typology and trademark of Ahmad Khalid Yusof since his momentous Alif Ba Ta silkscreen marking the National Cultural Congress at the National Art Gallery in 1971 (Aug 25 - Sept 12), with an affinity to Nature and imbibing the five cornerstones of Islam, namely Testimony of Faith, Prayer, Charity, Fasting and the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. Ahmad Khalid Yusof developed his soothing khat calligraphy technique in 1971. This work contains signature elements of traditional Malay patterns and iconography with the infusion of abstract art and ancient Arabic scriptures. A subtle interior geometry is created with the artist’s deftly manipulated colour nuances, rhythm, spatial ambiguity and patterning, thus setting a mood of existential bliss. Here, the khat calligraphy has attained a pictorial quality that occupies space and creates depth. Ahmad Khalid Yusof was an art academician, an artist and an activist all rolled into one. AHMAD KHALID YUSOF : Masjid, Undated

            Est: RM3,000 - RM7,000

Known as the foremost Malaysian artist using khat calligraphy technique in his painting practice, Ahmad Khalid breaks away from the prevailing style of Abstract Expressionism with his Alif Ba Ta series, skillfully developed from 1971. The two key elements in his works are the choice of khat motifs as pictorial forms and the dimensions of his pictorial method. Rhythmic optical images are transformed in his compositions which essentially originated from the art of khat. Upon viewing Ahmad Khalid’s pictures, one’s perceptual sense is instantaneously aroused as he transports the viewer into a meditative sensory experience, as seen in this mosque print.

            Est: RM22,000 - RM38,000

Ahmad Khalid Yusof (AKY) produced some of the most spiritually sublimed paintings in a new genre inspired by the blessings of Allah in his life, including the hardship years when his father was sent by the Japanese to teach the Malay language at the Tenri University in the Nara Prefecture in 1941-1945. He was between 7 and 11 years old then. AKY, whose uncle was the great Malay literati Za’ba, infused his works with Jawi khat calligraphic squiggles based on the Islamic Alif-Ba-Ta alphabets even before the Back-to-Roots exhortations of the National Cultural Congress in 1971. Such is the repetitive patterning caused by the truncated khat and oft suffused with azure colours, that his works are like a visual azan and in Western eyes, a kind of Optical Art. The result was something lofty, with whiffs of fantasy and cosmic even, but in this particular work, a bird’s eye view of a hilly slope is discernible. His works are a prayer in itself, and it got so touching in works produced during the year after his wife’s death on March 27, 1989, when the loss was palpable. But 1988 was happy times, coming a year before his retirement. AKF was selected for the Contemporary Paintings from Malaysia at Asia-Pacific Museum in Pasadena in July-October 1988. He also took part in the 3rd Asian Invitational exhibition in Fukuoka, Japan, in July, and was guest-curator of the Aseambankers show that October-November. Ahmad Khalid Yusof studied at Kirby, Liverpool (1956-1958), High Wycome (1965-1966), Winchester Art School (1966-1969), and Ohio University (MFA, 1975-1978). He taught at the Teachers College in Kota Baru, Specialist Teachers Training Institute (1963) and the Mara Institute of Technology (1979-1989). He was made Shah Alam Art Gallery director from 1991-1997. AKY was also guest-writer at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 1994, and the founder-president of the Malaysian Artists Association (PPM) in 1979. 109 x 89cm

Upon viewing Ahmad Khalid’s pictures, one’s perceptual sense is instantaneously aroused as he transports the viewer into a meditative sensory experience. Illustrated here is a tranquil piece with its focal point depicting a sky blue silhouette of a mihrab — an ornamental indentation in the wall of a mosque — which marks the direction of the qiblah. Mihrabs are usually shaped like a doorway and decorated with tiles and calligraphy to create prominence. In addition to marking the qiblah, the niche also amplifies the voice of the Imam during congregational prayer. The traditional mihrab is a common element of Islamic mosque architecture throughout the world. Ahmad Khalid Yusof conveys the beauty of Islamic architecture through this piece and its rectangular dimension is symbolic of a prayer rug. Ahmad Khalid Yusof was an art academician, an artist and an activist all rolled into one.
