Nurazmal Yusoff’s decade-long pursuit of a full-time art career has been marked by unwavering dedication. Early sketches reveal a young artist with nascent talent, which blossomed into a diverse practice encompassing expressionism and conceptualism. A member of the artist collective Dikalajingga, Yusoff, or Ali, shares a bond with fellow artists rooted in university camaraderie and a shared passion for music and figurative art. This foundation is evident in his 2008 works, characterized by masterful realism. While Ali’s artistic style has evolved, his core concerns remain consistent. His art is a reflection of personal experiences, societal observations, and political commentary. A pivotal moment arrived in 2007-2008, when he embarked on a self-imposed artistic review, seeking fresh perspectives.

Self-produced documents show the artist’s budding flair as a teen and blossomed with his experimentation and exploration of painting’s various genres, including expressionism and conceptualism. Like another artist in this collection, Khairina Khairuddin, Ali – as he is also referred to – is part of a group of six artists called Dikalajingga that shared a common studio space (of the same name) post-graduation. They bonded early on in university and had similar interests, such as music and figurative works. This early passion has carried throughout Ali’s practice and is most notable in his works from 2008 that see the figure perfected through a delivery of commendable realism.

This magnificent diptych is playful, colourful and possesses a child-like quality to it. It is perhaps a representation of the artists’ childhood as the artwork portrays clowns, ferris wheel, and other elements one may find at a fun fair. It puts a smile on anyone’s face.

ALI NURAZMAL YUSOFF (b. 1978) MASTERMIND, 2012, Oil on canvas

          Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

Ali Nurazmal Yusoff is a talented figurative painter whose paradoxical subject matter contains Social Realism inclinations. In this work, a young boy is illustrated holding a hand puppet in each hand, one is sad faced, the other one smiling. His enthusiastic expressions depict a child’s innocent and genuine emotions when at play but upon closer examination, the satirical image insinuates a court jester — as suggested by the boy’s white and black striped attire — the architect of a malicious plot played by the puppets. Ali Nurazmal’s painterly technique is described as the classic chiaroscuro style. The Italian word for light dark is used to portray a painting with strong contrast of light and dark as seen in most of Ali Nurazmal’s paintings particularly his epic Imitation Master — After Caravaggio II, homage for the great Old Master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s (1571-1610) masterpiece The Calling Of Saint Matthew. Ali Nurazmal Yusoff obtained a Degree in Fine Art from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Selangor (1996-2001). Flight of Fancy illustrates a young boy – who is coincidentally the artist’s first son - holding a palette on one hand and a paintbrush on the other gazing towards the viewer amidst the panorama of an ideal wonderland for children. Executed in two panels, the scene transports the observer to an imaginary vibrant landscape evoking a sense of innocent delight. Ali Nurazmal Yusoff obtained a Degree in Fine Art from University Institut Technology MARA, Selangor (1996 - 2001). Ali Nurazmal Yusoff is a talented figurative painter whose paradoxical subject matter contains social realism inclinations. His painterly technique is described as the classic chiaroscuro style. Here, the artist illustrates an image of a young child sitting on a sofa with a red cushion. She wears the facemask of a wild jaguar accentuated in colour to convey the security of children, whether they are truly safe even when they are at home. The painting is primarily depicted in monochromatic palette with hints of colour on specified areas of the canvas.
