          Zulkifli Yusoff (b. 1962) Voice 4, 2012

          Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

Zulkifli Yusoff often delves into the politics, history and folklore of the tanah air, to edify his canvas. The Malay Annals, Hang Tuah, Hikayat Munshi Abdullah, Malay Sketches (referencing the assassination in Pasir Salak), and the national treatise, the Rukun Negara, as a purge of the bloody internecine racial strife of May 13, 1969. With the five tenets and the New Economic Policy as its cornerstone, the Rukun Negara aimed to redress economic disparities among the races for a just society. The sculpture is presented in an orbital form made up of a complex layering of black and white strips accented with colours. Small images of fish motifs were affixed to the layers. The artist's keen perception of scale, design, proportion, and skill in transforming materials are reflected in this work. Zulkifli Yusoff had the distinction of having featured in two Venice Biennale appearances, the first in 1997, under Modernities And Memories: Recent Works From The Islamic World, and another in 2019. He won the hugely coveted Grand Minister's Prize and the Major Award for Sculpture at the 3rd Salon Malaysia in 1992, and the Major Award in the Bakat Muda Sezaman in 1988 and 1989 (jointly). Est: RM12,000 - RM22,000

The swagger and waggle of the itik (ducks) are used by Zulkifli Yusoff to comment on the lenggang-lenggok (seductive sway) of the gait of nubile Malay woman. During the Melayu Pop era of the 1960s, Malay woman wore tight figure-hugging kebayas. For all the irony, a feeling of nostalgia comes through strongly. Imprints of duck motifs in different pastel hues are plentiful and the one on the top right leaves its footprints all over. Psychedelic array of love symbols are featured, some of which have morphed into diamonds. Images vie with text excerpted from the song and arranged randomly, while the head of a typical Malay female entertainer is replicated and hidden, either in parts or behind a curtain of crossed lines. Zulkifli won the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1988 and 1989. In 1992, he landed Malaysia's biggest art award when won the Grand Minister's Prize in Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. This study is for an installation called Rancangan Bumi Hijau (Green Book Plan) from Zulkifli Yusoff's 2014 Razak Series. Basically, it was to encourage the people to carry out backyard or garden farming, hydrophonics planting and organic farming, besides promoting eating-greens lifestyle. The work encompasses five main components of landscapes, social interaction, beliefs, abstract and inheritance / independence, and extols the rich natural heritage of the country. The actual three-sided installation is a mixture of painted layered canvas strips and also for the sculptural forms, resin-encased concoctions either round or spearhead-shaped. Zulkifli showed his installation, Don't Play During Maghrib (1997) at the Venice Biennale under Modernities And Memories: Recent Works From The Islamic World in 1998. Zulkifli Yusoff has shifted between multiple mediums, from sculpture to painting, to convey his social messages. But it is through installation works, while still a student at UiTM, that he first gained prominence in the late 1980’s. Zulkifli grew up in Malaysia during a time of racial turmoil. Much of his current work is in response to this period of time, and he works from historical readings and as well as lived experiences. The artist considers his works to be “a dialogue on nation building and the making of a people.” The artist’s choice of composition keeps visitors constantly alert and aware of the visual statements that surround them. Often, his works reflect his take on the subject of power and socio-political issues. His pieces aim to reveal contemporary issues of power, identity and collective thought through the use of a variety of media. He uses his work to question the past and current state of the Malaysian identity, and it is also intended to trigger a dialogue regarding the understanding and application of the subject on both individual and national levels. While laden with the artist’s social commentary, Zulkifli’s works remain a visual treat layered with much depth.

Reformasi Series features eclectic figures rendered with intermingling lines and vibrant tones. The artwork is depicted in an expressive individual style with varying textures that conveys energy and movement. This early work explores the questions of power and socio-political issues, incorporating history, myths and folklore. Zulkifli Yusoff emerged as the supernova in the late 1980s when he won the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1988 and 1989. He sealed his status when he won the Minister's Grand Prize in Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. Zulkifli Yusoff's caricature in-your-eye works of the 1990s made him somewhat into a pahlawan 'Daumier', with the Power Series and Reformasi Series taking rein. While his characters are like the individual chessboard play stands, they have all taken own features of their own, some with suave dressings and some with subhuman looks and demeanour. Starting with digs against the pedantic academic Professor Kangkong and the lecherous Ahmad, the jabs become harder in the wake of Reformasi over the sacking and later jailing of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (then deputy prime minister). While the artist does not necessarily make a stand on the 'issues' he projects in his works, the statement can cut in strong. There was a time when he concentrated on his educator's role at the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim, and his educational credentials and his artist's accomplishments won him the National Academy Award (Visual Art) in 2007. He did his Diploma in Art and Design (Fine Art) at the Mara Institute of Technology, Shah Alam (1989), and then studied at the Manchester Polytechnic in England for his Masters (1991). It is his selection for prestigious international events that raises his profile. 1) The 1997 Venice Biennale under the fringe 'Modernities and Memories: Recent Works from the Islamic World'; 2) 1st Asia-Pacific Triennial of Art in Brisbane in 1993; 3) Singapore Biennale 2013; 4) Rukunegara 2: VOICE, Theo Art Projects, Art Stage Singapore, 2013; 5) Seychelles Biennale 1992; apart from solos: 6) Writing Power, National University of Singapore, 2011. A gaggle of Daumier-like caricatures with imaginatively rendered faces huddled closely together probably chattering and gossiping. The philosopher George Santayana once proclaimed: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Zulkifli Yusoff often delves into the politics, history and folklore of the tanah air, to edify his canvas. The Malay Annals, Hang Tuah, Hikayat Munshi Abdullah, Malay Sketches (referencing the assassination in Pasir Salak), and more recently, the national treatise, the Rukun Negara, as a purge of the bloody internecine racial strife of May 13, 1969. With the five tenets and the New Economic Policy as its cornerstone, the Rukun Negara aimed to redress economic disparities among the races for a just society. The five tenets behind the philosophical wellsprings are: Belief in God; Loyalty to King and Country; Supremacy of the Constitution; Rule of Law; and Courtesy and Morality. Zulkifli Yusoff brings to life historical and current events that have shaped Malaysian society unified through eloquent and distinct imageries. The tiger is a traditional Malay symbol of bravery, authority, power and respect. Zulkifli's compositions reflect his interest in historical events, fusing together motifs and shapes complemented with distinctive monochrome lines pulsating with movement. Exuberant colours infuse the artwork, anchored with geometric triangle shapes representing stability and direction. Zulkifli won the topmost Grand Minister's Prize in the Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. Poor Ahmad, a name much maligned in Zulkifli Yusoff's Brave New Art in the 1990s, notorious for jealousy, ignorance, lust and treachery. Here, his sins are not specified but you know from Zulkifli's expose that he's one scoundrel without scruples, without morals. In academia, he becomes Professor Kangkong and in politics, Professor Katak. With the figures in ugly caricatures and monochrome, from his Power series to his Reformasi series, the scene looks like a Tom Sharp novel with all the absurdities. This work is illustrated on Page 29 in the book, Zulkifli Yusoff: Powerful Dialogue (The Art Gallery Penang, 2000). At times, Zulkifli uses such slippery characters to comment on his own people and society. And the bad Javanese bring with them their mysticism or black arts… Artist-academician Zulkifli Yusoff has taken part in two editions of the Venice Biennale, more recently in 2019 under the Malaysia Pavilion, and in 1997 under the banner, Modernities and Memories: Recent Works from the Islamic World. His stature is greatly boosted, too, by selections to exhibitions such as the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Art in Brisbane, Australia, in 1993; the 3rd Asian Art Show in Fukuoka in 1989; the New Art From Southeast Asia in Fukuoka in 1991; the Asian Art Today in Hiroshima in 1994; the Singapore Biennale 2013; the Art Stage Singapore 2013; and the Seychelles Biennale 1992. Academia can be a cesspool of intrigues but in the clash of the pedagogues, the blood spilled will likely be those of the students. There's politics in every field. Scathing and provocative, Zulkifli Yusoff unleashes his venom on canvas and in sculpture figurines, with choice nicknames like Professor Katak or Professor Kangkong, or just plain Ahmad the lecherous fornicator with frequent visits to the border. The 'katak' here could also refer to the political 'frogs' who jump from party to party for lucre and expediency. A jumble of grotesque faces with graffiti all over. These works got full play in the exhibition, Powerful Dialogue, at The Art Gallery Penang in 2000, and reprised partly in Zulkifli Yusoff: A Historical Survey (1996-2009), at Art Salon@SENI, Kuala Lumpur. Zulkifli won the topmost Grand Minister's Prize in the Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. The title is translated as The Smart Boy And Temasik People. Working with a plethora of media, Zulkifli Yusoff has played a significant role in developing installation art in Malaysia. His creative oeuvre includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and mixed media compositions. Zulkifli Yusoff's installation titled Kebun Pak Awang, named after a 1970s radio show about a farming family — reminiscent of a plantation or an orchard setting in a kampung — was on display at the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2019. He participated in the 47th Venice Biennale themed Modernities And Memories: Recent Works From The Islamic World in 1997 showcasing his installation Don't Play During Maghrib. Another iconic installation titled Immunity dated 1993 was on display in an exhibition titled Pusaka: Warisan Kemudi Wawasan (Embracing Our Heritage For The Future) at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery in 2019. For the past three decades, Zulkifli has developed a multi-disciplinary practice that engages with the issues of history, power and greed. The works from the 1990s period are highly imaginative, reflecting not only his thought processes, but contemplates social structures of present-day realities. Zulkifli turns his attention to the subject of power and the tensions within groups, dominated by a rich variety of lines that give weight to the subjects. Long Journey offers an amalgam of forms that are reintegrated in a dramatic black and white composition on canvas. Zulkifli won the topmost Grand Minister’s Prize in the Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. There's no stopping the antics of the philandering Ahmad, who likes to drive around in his Beetle (Volkswagen), going to sleazy places such as Jalan Kandang Babi (In Malay parlance, ‘babi’ which means pig, is a derogatory term). This work from Zulkifli Yusof’s Brave New Art series (shown at The Art Gallery Penang) precedes his Reformasi series. Both his Brave New Art and Reformasi series were also shown in Zulkifli Yusoff: A Historical Survey 1996-2009 at Art Salon@SENI organised by The Art Gallery. Est: RM14,000 - RM26,000

Zulkifli Yusoff is one of Malaysia’s most established contemporary artists. He embraced experimentations in painting, sculptures, and installations, employing old and new techniques influenced by history. Recollecting memories of the days when the peninsular was under colonial rule and assimilating the use of silkscreen painting combined with mixed media, Zulkifli developed a distinctive style, characterized by a layered format incorporating various symbols. Itik Pulang Petang IV (Malaya Series) is a distinctive example portrayed by layers of rich colours and daring swirls of fluid black lines that enhance the vividness of the image. Zulkifli won the topmost Grand Minister’s Prize in the Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. He won the Major Award in the Bakat Muda Sezaman in 1988 and jointly in 1989. He had taken part in the Venice Biennale twice, in 1997 under the ‘Modernities And Memories: Recent Works From The Islamic World’, and then again in 2019. He taught at the Universiti ITM and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim, which won him the National Academy Award (Visual Art) in 2007. His credentials were the Masters at Manchester Polytechnic in England (1991) and Diploma at the Mara Institute of Technology (1989). He was selected for the 1st Asia-Pacific Triennial of Art in Brisbane in 1993, the Seychelles Biennale 1992, and Singapore Biennale 2013.

Studies (Merdeka 57 II), illustrates the 20 cents coin issued by the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya. Studies (Itik Pulang Petang II) integrates images of ducks, combined with swirling forms, love symbols and rattan patterned background – elements associated with the atmosphere of kampung.

Zulkifli Yusoff brings to life historical and current events that have shaped Malaysian society unified through eloquent and distinct imageries. The tiger is a traditional Malay symbol of bravery, authority, power and respect. The symbol of the tiger was featured prominently as the national emblem on many local institutions. Fresh colours infuse the artwork with a dynamic energy, pulsating with monochromatic lines, complemented by a structural combination of forms. Zulkifli won the topmost Grand Minister’s Prize in the Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. Zulkifli Yusoff’s caricature in-your-eye works of the 1990s made him somewhat into a pahlawan ‘Daumier’, with the Power Series and Reformasi Series taking rein. While the artist does not necessarily make a stand on the ‘issues’ he projects in his works, the statement can cut in strong. Zulkifli won the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1988 and 1989. In 1992, he landed Malaysia’s biggest art award when won the Grand Minister’s Prize in Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. There was a time when he concentrated on his educator’s role at the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim, and his educational credentials and his artist’s accomplishments won him the National Academy Award (Visual Art) in 2007. He did his Diploma in Art and Design (Fine Art) at the Mara Institute of Technology, Shah Alam (1989), and then studied at the Manchester Polytechnic in England for his Masters (1991). It is his selection for prestigious international events that raises his profile. 1) The 1997 Venice Biennale under the fringe ‘Modernities and Memories: Recent Works from the Islamic World' Venice Biennale; 2) 1st Asia_Pacific Triennial of Art in Brisbane in 1993; 3) Singapore Biennale 2013; 4) Rukunegara 2: VOICE Theo Art Projects, Art Stage Singapore, 2013; 5) Seychelles Biennale 1992; apart from solos: 6) Writing Power, National University of Singapore, 2011. This sequence of fourteen polychromatic images on a large canvas is illustrated in a comic strip manner and in the abstract style – its figures are the main characters of a celebratory and joyous narrative - a subject matter that is uniquely explored by Zulkifli Yusoff, as evident in this bold and vibrant composition. The figures are certainly indulging themselves in their activities, having loads of fun. It's a blissful moment. Zulkifli won the topmost Grand Minister’s Prize in the Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. Rendered with intricate lines and rich earthy colours, the composition is depicted in Zulkifli Yusoff’s iconic use of gestural marks. The artist’s early works explore the questions of power and socio-political issues of the period. Visually arresting, the works of Zulkifli exude emotional energy through board gestural marks. Working across various mediums, his works often touch on issues of power structures, history, folklore, and identity. Differences in opinion and jeopardised interests caused the two ministers to be at loggerheads. Zulkifli Yusoff emerged as the supernova in the late 1980s when he won the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1988 and 1989. He sealed his status when he won the Minister’s Grand Prize in Salon Malaysia in 1992, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture. Poor Ahmad, a name much maligned in Zulkifli Yusoff’s Brave New Art in the 1990s, notorious for jealousy, ignorance, lust and treachery. Here, his sins are not specified but you know from Zulkifli’s expose that he’s one scoundrel without scruples, without moral. In academia, he becomes Professor Kangkong and in politics, Professor Katak. With the figures in ugly caricatures and monochrome, from his Power Series to his Reformasi Series, the scene looks like a Tom Sharp novel with all the absurdities. This work is illustrated on Page 29 in the book, Zulkifli Yusoff: Powerful Dialogue (The Art Gallery, 2000). This work typifies Zulkifli Yusoff’s powerful chessboard power-game installations that won him the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1988, when he was still a third-year student at the Mara Institute of Technology. It won him also a cult following when he won the 1989 Major Award again, jointly with Tan Chin Kuan. Those were the days of this restless Angry Young Man, who showed up the fopperies of a feudal society while softening his hard-hitting message with the gentility of a bangsawan theatre. And it was only a year ago, 1987, that he obscurely made his debut in group exhibitions like Tasik Cini.

Zulkifli Yusoff is a skilful story-teller on canvas and in installations, dipping into the country’s history, culture, folklores, art, music and literature, especially of the Malay World, as reflection, time comparison, comment and critique. His sources include legends such as Gunung Ledang and Mahsuri, the Malay Annals, personalities like Munshi Abdullah, Birch and acting-singing icons who blazed the silver screen. The theme revolves around power, lust and intrigues. In this work, wedged on the top right corner, is an image of General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the dreaded ‘Tiger of Malaya’ and the ‘Beast of Bataan’ (the Philippines). Never mind that he was tried and executed (Feb 23, 1946) for military atrocities committed in the Philippines during World War II, and not the then Malaya too. Yet, he is viewed differently, as a hero and patriot, by the Japanese then and now, while the victims and their descendants blame him for the wartime crimes. Martin Luther King Junior once said: “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” Are events predestined, or can history be whitewashed or changed?
