          FAUZUL YUSRI : Beauty, 2021

          Est: RM7,000 - RM12,000

After completing his studies, he came under the apprenticeship of master Malaysian artist and curator, Yusof Ghani. Heavy-bodied pigments like oil paints, pumice & industrial texture paste compliment the signature surface scarring, loose irreverence, and layering that have become fundamental to the structure of Fauzul’s images. As a result, the viewer may dissect the image in terms of spatial and textural depth, which animates isolated figures and forms so that they appear to float. Fauzul has received attention from prominent collectors including renowned British architect, Norman Foster, and received numerous awards in painting competitions, including Galeri Shah Alam and Jury Award 2004 Bakat Muda Sezaman. He has held over 14 solo exhibitions – the latest being ‘BATU’ in 2023 at TAKSU.

Never one to be too direct in his messages through his art, Fauzul Yusri sticks to the philosophy that, “Artists should not be too direct, and be more creative with their messages.” Set against a background of deep red, the only forms present in this canvas is a figure that looks like a woman. A white bubblelike depiction appears from this figure, which gives the impression that this figure imagines itself as the etching — a sexy (as indicated by its title) and confident. After having graduated from UiTM Shah Alam in 1999, Fauzul has then exhibited his work all around Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UK. He also received special mentions from the Young Contemporary Art Award in 2002 and the Kijang Art Awards in 2004. Malaysia’s National Art Gallery, Bank Negara Malaysia, EQ Fine Arts Gallery and HSBC Bank Malaysia have collected Fauzul’s artworks, and until this day has been noted for his distinctive style in etching techniques.

Seniman (The Artist) was featured in Fauzul Yusri’s seventh solo exhibition called Guris in 2011. The exhibition explored markings on the surface as a form of visual expression. Aptly naming this body of work ‘scratch’, Fauzul Yusri redirects the image towards the surface - “the painting’s epidermis”, wrote Gina Fairley. The emphasise lies on “the scratch and colour” instead of “the figure or its narrative”. Fauzul Yusri graduated from Universiti Institut Teknologi MARA in Shah Alam in 1999. He has been exhibiting in various galleries in Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UK. He presented his first solo show by Elm Quay Fine Arts in 2001 titled Works On Canvas followed by Cages in 2003. Di Dinding (On The Wall) depicts an epically witty illustration of haphazard doodles and words hand-drawn over a murky shade of green with hints of white, beige, yellow and red. Fauzul Yusri’s sporadic childlike drawings of sunflower, dinosaur, stickwoman, human faces, elephant, sailboat, among other instinctive scrawls with words such as ‘bentuk’ (shape), ‘don’t’, ‘keras’, and a Jawi writing ‘بإك يڅ لكرن’ which reads ‘lakaran yang baik’ (a good sketch) on the left side of the artwork are humorous and visually engaging. Ideologikku is a combination of three single words which is idea, logik (logic) and ku(me). Perhaps it's about an idea that was formed by using logical thinking that came from a mind of his own. A head on a bicycle suggests that the brain keeps on working to generate amazing ideas and insight, cycling away from the surrounding black space, allowing imagination to roam freely. ÒArtists should not be too direct, and be more creative with their messages.Ó That is exactly the stand Fauzul Yusri takes as he creates yet another unfathomable yet curiosity-evoking piece. Despite the sandy, calm brown he takes on throughout this piece of artwork, random and sporadic forms of grey masses decorate the canvas - as if floating or suspended, even. Formless markings, scratching and scarring also appear here and there. In its entirety, the message is quiet yet bold, honest yet a little distorted.

Fauzul Yusri’s painted drawings are filled with lots of graffiti-like adventure of animate and inanimate objects, sometimes whole and sometimes in fragments, meaningless and raw like coming from the subconscious mind. However, look closer, and you might find method behind the (seeming) madness: history is marked by development and progress, and Faizul uses common imagery (the Golden Arches and the automobile, to name two) to state his case.
