Ludwig Zahn, The Master Architect of a Gothic Cathedral

Signed lower right (partially re-drawn): Lud(wig Zahn) A master architect contemplates his plans in a fanciful medieval styled interior. A church floor plan hangs on the wall beside him, and to his left we see a sculpture of an architect. The young woman perched on the table beside him with a pair of compasses in her hand can be read as a personification of architecture inspiring the man in his work. To his right we see stonemasons at work, and the large window opens up onto a view of a cathedral being built in idealised Gothic proportions.
