    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

ALFREDO ZALCE (MEXICAN, 1908-2003) GENRE SCENE, watercolor on paper, signed and inscribed lower left "ALFREDO ZALCE / MEXICO". Housed under glass in a modern frame, retaining a period printed merchant label for "A. R. Skillen & Co." applied to board fragment verso. Circa 1940. 13" x 11 1/2" sight, 17 3/4" x 15 3/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Alfredo Zalce (1908-2003) was an important 20th century Mexican artist, teacher, and activist. Usually associated with fellow artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957), Zalce is noted for his modernist style that explores the varied Mexican cultural landscape, often through the depiction of working class figures engaged in daily activity. The present example likely depicts the preparation of a Mojigangas, a large-scale puppet-like figure used in Day of the Dead parades and associated ceremonies.
