Hans Zatzka Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Historical-scenes painter, Genre Painter, b. 1859 - d. 1949

Trained at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts, Hans Zatzka, artist and innovator, is best known for colorful depictions of whimsical, spiritual, and mythological imagery. He frequently focused on allegories and fairy tales, and many of Hans Zatzka's paintings featured women, ranging from the sensuous The Daydream of Demeter to the stately Madonna and Child. He also produced incredibly detailed oil illustrations, with self-explanatory titles, such as Still Life with Flowers, Bird, and Butterflies, and Lilies of the Valley in a Glass.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hans Zatzka's artwork for sale became popular as so-called bedroom pictures. This was a new format that he pioneered, creating illustrations that fitted smaller wall spaces. Due to certain contract restrictions, the artist Hans Zatzka occasionally worked under different pseudonyms, including Bernard Zatzka, Joseph Bernard, and Pierre de Ronsard. Collectors can find vintage portrait paintings for sale at Invaluable.

(Vienna 1859–1945) The painter's palette, signed H. Zatzka, oil on wooden panel, 70 x 113 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. The artist's palette impresses with its vibrant colours, detailed compositions, and dreamy atmosphere. A fascinating setting unfolds, interweaving several complex, detailed scenes. In the foreground of the painting are romantic scenes depicting young women in pastoral landscapes. These women are shown in an idealised setting, surrounded by flowers, water, or idyllic gardens and meadows. Hans Zatzka's flower arrangements - in this case roses and lilies - radiate vitality and beauty. All of these backgrounds create a fairytale-like, harmonious atmosphere that introduces the viewer to a paradisiacal world. Angels and heavenly scenes are a particular focus. On the far left of the painting, an angel with fine, detailed wings floats in a dreamy scene, while the angel on the bottom right could possibly be interpreted as Cupid. The painting also shows mythological figures depicted in idealised form. These figures are dressed in flowing robes and graceful poses, emphasising their sensual and dreamy expressions. The animals are noteworthy - the sleeping lion, symbolising strength and courage, and a frog, possibly representing a male figure in love with a woman's beauty. Hans Zatzka uses bright colours, in this painting a strong red, blue and yellow tones, which emphasise the figures and surroundings. The vivid colouring not only creates visual depth, but also the emotional intensity and fairy-tale atmosphere of the painting.

Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.Hans Zatzka was born on 8 March 1859 in Vienna. His father Bartholomaus was a construction worker, and his mother was Marie Karpischek Zatzka. Between 1877 and 1882, he studied at the Academie des Beaux-Arts, under Christian Griepenkerl, Carl Wurzinger, and Karl von Blaas. Zatzka was able to earn a living through the production of frescoes for churches and other institutions. In 1885, Zatzka was commissioned to create the ceiling fresco The Naiad of Baden at Kurhaus Baden. Many of Zatzka's works were religious paintings and altar pieces dedicated to various churches in Austria. However, he is more known for his paintings of women, fairies, and other fantastical scenes. Often, he would draw inspiration from the works of Richard Wagner and the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. In the late 19th and early 20th century, several pieces by Zatzka were photographed and made into commercial and collectable postcards.During the 1920s, Zatzka's style became the decor of choice throughout Europe. In addition, the previous thirty years held a resurgence for Zatzka.Currently, most of Zatzka's paintings reside in private collections.
