    Est: £800 - £1,200

Christian Friedrich Zincke (German, c.1683-1767) Portrait of Sir J Bernard, bust-length, in a blue coat miniature on ivory, oval 4.8 x 4cm Christian Friedrich Zincke was a renowned German miniature painter. Trained under the guidance of his father, and later under influential artists such as Boit, Zincke established himself as a prominent figure in 18th-century portraiture after moving to England. One of his most notable contributions to the art world was his exceptional use of the colour blue. He developed a distinctive palette that brought vibrancy and depth to his miniatures, setting them apart from his contemporaries. His blue hues, rich and luminous, were particularly admired for their clarity and intensity, adding a lifelike quality to his subjects' eyes and garments. Zincke's innovative techniques and his keen eye for colour nuances not only earned him patronage from the British aristocracy, including members of the royal family, but also established his legacy as a pivotal figure in the evolution of miniature painting. CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH ZINCKE (GERMAN 1683/4-1767) Portrait miniature of a Lady, wearing a low cut blue dress with white underslip, a sprig of white flowers in her long flowing brown hair, painted circa 1725 Enamel  Set within the inside lid of a gilt-mounted tortoiseshell box, the cover with pique work depicting flowers and a butterfly Oval, 45mm (1 3/4in) high Exhibited: The Comerford Collection: Portrait Miniatures, The Irish Architectural Archives, Dublin, 2009 Literature: The Comerford Collection: Portrait.Miniatures, (privately published, Dublin, 2009) pp 6, 19 (# 36) Although the identity of the sitter is unknown, she was undoubtedly a lady of fashion and wealth. The presence of a butterfly on the lid must have had some symbolic meaning. A butterfly has stood to mean many things but overwhelmingly, cultural myth and lore honor the butterfly as a symbol of transformation because of its impressive process of metamorphosis. Perhaps the sitter was in the process of a significant transformation in her life such as marriage.

CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH ZINCKE (1683-1767) A portrait miniature of a lady, wearing a white dress and blue cape, c.1720 Enamel on copper Gold frame with reeded edge Oval, 1 ¾ in. (45mm) high Provenance: Bonhams London, 22 February 1995, lot 63; Bonhams, London, 27 November 2005, lot 27; European Private Collection Footnote: This portrait of a young woman shows Zincke working in his favoured colours of blue and white; a fashionable combination in the eighteenth century. The darker blue flaunted Zincke’s skill in his painting of drapery, while the white colour alluded to the sitter’s youthfulness and also a type of chemise more often worn in private than in public. The informality of this dress (seen here also in the lifted edge of the sitter’s cloak) indicates the status of the portrait enamel as a personal as opposed to a public portrait type. Christian Friedrich Zincke was the most successful enamel painter in England in the eighteenth century. A pupil of William Boit, himself the effective successor to Jean Petitot, who introduced the practice in England, Zincke found success so easy that by 1741 he was able to charge the enormous sum of thirty guineas for a miniature. Unlike most enamellists, Zincke painted sitters from life instead on relying on copying from large oil portraits. Due to deteriorating eyesight, Zincke’s career ended prematurely in the 1740s, although by then he had established himself as one of the most prolific and successful portrait enamellists of the eighteenth century. His work is held in a number of major national collections, including the Ashmolean Museum, the Royal Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
