Anna Katrina Zinkeisen, British 1901-1976 - The Spinning Wheel; oil on canvas, signed lower left (partially covered by frame), 64 x 77 cm (ARR) Provenance: Phillips, London, Modern British Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture including Modern Australian Paintings, 13th June 1989, lot 131 (unsold); Christie’s, London, Twentieth Century British Art, 13th June 2002, lot 21 (unsold); private collection Note: this early work by Anna Zinkeisen captures the glamour of theatreland in a painting which has it's foundation in her classical training and portraiture. The work displays hints of Art Deco sensibilities, with stylised forms and clean lines producing a sophisticated, modern appearance whilst retaining its classical realism. Anna worked closely alongside her older sister, Doris Zinkeisen, for the best part of both their careers. They both were commissioned to paint murals for RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth. Whilst both renowned young artists, rubbing shoulders with Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward and John Gielgud, they volunteered in both great wars as VADs. Anna’s self-portrait (1944) is now exhibiting in the National Portrait Gallery.

Original vintage London Transport poster for private bus hire to visit the Aldershot Tattoo that took place June 16 & 19 to 23 1934 - Design by Anna Katrina Zinkeisen (1901-1976) features a man on a horse leading the soldiers forward towards the castle. Printed by the Dangerfield Printing Company Ltd. The Aldershot Military Tattoo was an annual performance dating back to 1894, organised to raise money for military charities. •ANNA ZINKEISEN (1901-1961) BRITANNIA MOUNTED BY HORSE GUARD'S PARADE signed l.r.: A. Zinkeisen, gouache with gold paint 39cm by 28.5cm; 15 1/2in by 11 1/4in Anna Katrina Zinkeisen won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools from Harrow School of Art and in both 1920 and 1921 she won the Landseer Award. She later worked for Wedgwood as a ceramics designer. With her sister Doris Anna she contributed murals to the passenger liners the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. During the Second World War she worked mornings in the casualty ward at St Mary s Hospital Paddington and painted in a disused operating theatre in the afternoons. Her painting of plastic surgeon Sir Archibald Hector McIndoe is hung at the National Portrait Gallery as is her own self-portrait circa 1944.
