I pittori stranieri, Bergamo 1911, Tav. 133 Valentín de Zubiaurre, pittore spagnolo vissuto a cavallo tra il XIX e il XX secolo, fa parte di una famiglia profondamente legata all'arte, insieme a suo fratello Ramón, anch'egli pittore di grande successo. L'arte di Valentín è nota per il suo stile realistico e per la sua capacità di catturare momenti tratti dalla vita quotidiana dei contadini spagnoli, con particolare attenzione ai costumi tradizionali e agli scenari rurali tipici della Spagna. La sua tecnica si distingue per l'attenzione meticolosa ai dettagli e per l'uso vibrante del colore, riuscendo a cogliere l'essenza culturale e storica delle tradizioni spagnole. All'età di quindici anni, la sua formazione artistica inizia con le lezioni del pittore Daniel Perea e, successivamente, si iscrive insieme al fratello all'Accademia di Belle Arti di San Fernando a Madrid. Nonostante questo, il peso della loro formazione accademica li manterrà sempre legati ai Primitivi Fiamminghi e agli artisti spagnoli contemporanei, come Ignacio Zuloaga, con i quali condividono l'attenzione per le radici culturali spagnole. Le opere di Valentín sono cariche di simbolismo, con volti dai tratti intensi e mani segnate dal duro lavoro quotidiano. Il realismo dei suoi dipinti è arricchito dalla precisione con cui descrive tessuti e ornamenti tradizionali, e vi è una profonda empatia verso i suoi soggetti. Measurements: 100 x 84 cm; 116 x 102 cm (frame). Son of the musical composer of the same name, Valentín Zubiaurre was born deaf and dumb, like his younger brother Ramón, also a painter. He began his training with the painter Daniel Perea, also deaf and mute, before entering the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1894. There he was a disciple of Carlos de Haes, Muñoz Degrain, Ferrant and Moreno Carbonero, and at the same time he completed his solid training by visiting the Prado Museum. In 1898 the two Zubiaurre brothers embarked on a study trip that would take them to France, Italy and the Netherlands. On their return to Spain they obtained a scholarship from the Diputación de Vizcaya, in 1902, which allowed them to settle in Paris. There they attended classes at the Académie Julian, became acquainted with the modern trends that were then developing in the French capital and became interested in Impressionism. However, the Zubiaurre brothers were not permeable to its influence, mainly due to the weight of their academic training and their admiration for the Flemish and Italian primitives as well as for contemporary Spanish painters such as Dario de Regoyos and, especially, Ignacio Zuloaga. Valentín de Zubiaurre regularly sent his works to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded on several occasions; in 1908 he obtained the second medal, and in 1917 he was awarded the first medal. He was also distinguished with awards from foreign institutions, and won prizes in outstanding international competitions held in the first decade of the 20th century, among them those of Munich, Buenos Aires, Brussels, San Francisco, San Diego and the University of Panama. From the 1920s until the Civil War, the Zubiaurre brothers experienced their period of greatest success and recognition, both in Spain and internationally. After the war Valentín de Zubiaurre resumed his career in Spain, and his recognition became official with his appointment as a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1945, culminating with the medal of honor awarded to him at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1957. He is currently represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Chicago, Buenos Aires, Paris, Luxembourg, Munich, Berlin, Tokyo, Pittsburg and San Diego, as well as in the main art galleries of the Basque Country, the Castagnino Museum in Argentina, the Reina Sofía National Art Center, the BBVA collection and the Museum of Modern Art in Rome, among others, both public and private.

In the background, a mountainous outline can be seen. This type of composition was common in Valentín Zubiaurre's painting, allowing him to ennoble both the inhabitants of rural areas and the Basque landscape. The intense chromatic contrast, with its twilight shifts, and the expressiveness of the old woman's weathered face are characteristic of this artist, who (together with his brother Ramón) was a renovator of Spanish regionalism. The son of the musical composer of the same name, Valentín Zubiaurre was born deaf and dumb, like his younger brother Ramón, also a painter. He began his training with the painter Daniel Perea, who was also deaf and mute, before entering the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1894. There he was a pupil of Carlos de Haes, Muñoz Degrain, Ferrant and Moreno Carbonero, and at the same time completed his solid training by visiting the Prado Museum. In 1898 the two Zubiaurre brothers set out on a study trip that took them to France, Italy and the Netherlands. Valentin Zubiarre's paintings usually feature elderly men and women, whose faces, weathered by life in the countryside or on the high seas, he endows with great solemnity. In this painting, the three characters adopt silent countenances that convey an ancient wisdom, rooted in their homeland. Behind them, the fishing village of Ondarroa is depicted in the manner of an architectural sketch, with a synthetic desire. The essentialist reduction of the houses contrasts with the naturalism of the faces. The woman and one of the men carry large baskets of juicy fruit. A contrasting palette complements the expressiveness of the line. Ramón Zubiaurre ennobled the inhabitants of the rural areas depositing in it a great sensibility, of which this portrait of an old woman in the foreground leaves testimony, being drawn in the distance a twilight landscape wrapped in emerald coloured lights. Brother of Valentín de Zubiaurre, also a painter and also deaf and mute like him, he always maintained a close relationship with his brother, and in fact both began their careers with his sister Pilar, who was in charge of the sale of his paintings and the organization of numerous exhibitions, both in Spain and abroad, in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Germany and other countries. Between 1903 and 1912 he received a scholarship from the Diputación de Vizcaya, which allowed him to devote himself fully to painting. This work falls within the framework of the rise of regionalism in Spain in the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, an art with a Romantic, costumbrista heritage and a realistic, meticulous style, which focused on depicting subjects, themes and characters reflecting a new sense of folklore. In this context, the painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of fashions brought in from outside. The son of the musical composer of the same name, Valentín Zubiaurre was born deaf and dumb, like his younger brother Ramón, also a painter. He began his training with the painter Daniel Perea before entering the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1894. There he was a disciple of Carlos de Haes, Muñoz Degrain, Ferrant and Moreno Carbonero. In 1898 the two Zubiaurre brothers set out on a study trip that took them to France, Italy and the Netherlands. On their return to Spain they obtained a grant from the Diputación de Vizcaya in 1902, which enabled them to settle in Paris. They attended classes at the Académie Julian and became acquainted with modern trends, but were not permeable to their influence, mainly due to the weight of their academic training and their admiration for both the Flemish and Italian primitives and contemporary Spanish painters such as Darío de Regoyos and Ignacio Zuloaga. Valentín de Zubiaurre regularly sent his works to the National Fine Arts Exhibitions and was awarded several prizes; in 1908 he won the second medal and in 1917 the first. He was also distinguished with prizes from foreign institutions and won prizes at important international competitions held in the first decade of the 20th century, including those of Munich, Buenos Aires, Brussels, San Francisco and San Diego. From the 1920s onwards, the Zubiaurre brothers experienced their most successful period, both in Spain and internationally. After the war Valentín de Zubiaurre resumed his career in Spain, and his recognition became official with his appointment as a full member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1945, culminating in the medal of honour awarded to him at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1957, six years before his death. He is currently represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Chicago, Buenos Aires, Paris, Luxembourg, Munich, Berlin, Tokyo, Pittsburg and San Diego, as well as in the main art galleries of the Basque Country, the Castagnino Museum in Argentina, the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, the BBVA collection and the Museum of Modern Art in Rome, among others, both public and private.

The intense chromatic contrast, with its twilight shifts, and the expressiveness of the old woman's weathered face are characteristic of this artist, who (together with his brother Ramón) was a renovator of Spanish regionalism.             Dedicated "To my friend Cassadó", signed, located "Madrid" and dated in the lower right corner. Portrait of Gaspar Cassadó i Moreu (Barcelona 1897 - Madrid 1966) composer and one of the most important cellists of his time. Cassadó grew up in a musical environment and soon distinguished himself as a musician. In 1907, the Barcelona City Council awarded him a scholarship that enabled him to move to Paris with his father and brother. There he began to study with Pau Casal until 1914, when the First World War broke out and he had to return to his native Barcelona. In the years that followed, he toured several Spanish cities. It was presumably on a visit to Madrid that Valentín de Zubiaurre, whose family was also linked to music, painted this striking portrait, very much in keeping with the aesthetic taste of the time. Portrayed at the age of 19, dressed in a suit and waistcoat, against a landscape background with a classical temple on the left, this work stands out for the intensity of the composer's gaze and expression, captured precisely in his attitude and personality by Valentín de Zubiaurre, who uses a cold range of blues and violets that flood the work, which together with a certain hieratism in the figure, place it among the artist's most symbolist influenced works. We see in this painting a magnificent double portrait that shows the mastery and modernity of its author, a Valentín de Zubiaurre who knew how to represent the people of his time, especially Basques and Castilians. Here he shows us a young couple, two villagers with smooth complexions and expectant eyes who watch in amazement at what is happening before them. The male figure, wearing a txapela, rests his hands on a stick while she offers him a bowl of pears and other fruit. This is a type of folkloristic representation in which Valentín de Zubiaurre was particularly outstanding, extolling popular types and Basque corners that were about to disappear. Valentín de Zubiaurre cultivated genre painting, focusing mainly on Basque and Castilian themes, and also dealt with landscapes. His masterly, intellectual painting is dominated by a certain melancholy that distinguishes his language from that of his brother Ramón.
