    Feb. 26, 2025

DANIEL ZULOAGA BONETA (Madrid, 1852 - Segovia, 1921). "Christ with the evangelists". Glazed ceramic panel.

    Est: €4,000 - €5,000

DANIEL ZULOAGA BONETA (Madrid, 1852 - Segovia, 1921). "Christ with the evangelists". Glazed ceramic panel. Measurements: 170 x 304 cm. The heads were molded and glazed with "metallic reflection", according to an Arab technique investigated by the author himself. This work follows the model of the famous enameled frontal of Santo Domingo de Silos, today in the Museum of Burgos. A very similar work, "ceramic panel with apostolate", is kept in the Zuloaga Museum in Saegovia. An outstanding ceramist and painter trained at the Sèvres ceramics school, where he was a disciple of Salvetat and Regnault, Daniel Zuloaga was the uncle of the famous painter Ignacio Zuloaga. He was the founder, together with his brothers, of the Royal Factory of La Moncloa. Later he also had workshops in Vallehermoso, Segovia and Pasajes de San Juan. He made numerous ceramic murals, such as those on the facade of the Palacio de Velázquez or the stove of the Palacio de Cristal del Retiro, and exhibited individually in various parts of Spain, being of special relevance his 1916 exhibition in the Sala Parés in Barcelona, where he obtained great success in sales and public. He also taught at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid, from 1889. He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Zaragoza, and the year after his death a posthumous exhibition was dedicated to him at the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. He is currently represented in the museum that bears his name in Segovia.

Measurements: 60 x 178 cm; 77 x 196 cm (frame). Juan Zuloaga, was a ceramist son of Daniel Zuloaga, also a ceramist, grandson of Eusebio Zuloaga, and cousin of the painter Ignacio Zuloaga. Juan began his academic training, learning from the family tradition. However, he completed his education by studying at the Provincial School of Arts and Crafts in Segovia and at the School of Ceramics in Sèvres, just as his father had done. It was during his stay in France, as a pensioner, when he carried out ceramic works in the Louvre Museum, together with Ignacio Zuloaga and Paco Durrio, with whom he shared his time in the French capital. After his stay in Paris, Juan Zuloaga traveled to Rome where he continued his academic training. It was already in 1915, when he decided to return to Spain and began working as a teacher at the Special School of Artistic Ceramics, located in Madrid. After the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War, Zuloaga and his son decided in 1951 to move to Argentina to found the ceramic school of Mar de Plata. However, due to health problems Juan Zuloaga returned to Spain.
