Biography

David Cobley RP NEAC is one of the UK's leading portrait and figure painters. People are his subject matter, and he has been drawing and painting them most of his life.

After a Foundation year at Northampton he went on to Liverpool to study Fine Art. The next few years were spent away from painting, and in Japan he took a degree in comparative culture at Sophia University. Since being shortlisted for the the John Player (now the BP) Portrait Award in 1989 he has been busy with portrait commissions and paintings on more personal themes.

He has held one-man shows in Bath and London, and been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the New English Art Club. Commissions include HRH The Princess Royal, and his portraits of Ken Dodd and Sir Martin Evans hang in the National Portrait Gallery.
