Biography

Founded in 1826 by Jonathan Lyon, Lyon & Turnbull is the oldest auction house in Scotland, and the largest independent U.K. auction house not based in London. The auction house has grown significantly in recent years, and has been named the fastest growing U.K. auction house, boasting salerooms in Edinburgh, London, and Glasgow. Lyon & Turnbull specializes in fine art, antiques, and jewelry. The auction house is a platinum member of Invaluable.com, and hosted 30 live auctions on the site in 2014. Lyon & Turnbull typically hosts at least 30 auctions each year.

In its storied history, Lyon & Turnbull famously sold a pair of silk bloomers that belonged to Queen Victoria for $14,940. The auction house also uncovered a valuable previously unrecorded plate from artist Francesco Xanto Avelli in 2011, selling for £391,250. Additionally, Lyon & Turnbull broke records with the more than £4 million sale of the Drambuie art collection.
