About Weschler's

Biography

Built on a reputation of trust and reliability, Weschler's is an auction tradition in our nation's capital.

Since 1890 when Adam Weschler held the first auction in Washington, we have continued our way of doing business––clear, fair and forthright, and always placing the interests of our clients first. Weschler's goal is to achieve maximum return for our clients at auction, whether the property is from a large estate, a local institution, a private collection or the property of an individual.

Weschler's is a team of skilled appraisers and specialists. Our appraisers comprise a combined experience of over 40 years in the auction and appraisal business. Our expertise encompasses many areas––European and American furniture and decorations; paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture; jewelry, coins and watches; 20th century decorative arts; Asian works of art; and rugs, carpets and tapestries. Our seasoned auction professionals make sure each object is well presented and handled with care, and that each transaction is completed in a timely manner. Weschler's knowledge and consistency leads to solid appraisals and excellent sale outcomes.

Weschler's holds a range of sales and auctions. From our much anticipated quarterly Capital Collections Estate Auctions complete with detailed catalogues and special preview days to our weekly Metro Auctions and monthly Metro Online Auctions, we appraise and auction objects over a broad value spectrum. Weschler's is uniquely equipped to meet the varying needs of our consignors. We can accommodate the entire contents of an estate, the needs of a downsizing household, as well as those of the private collector or individual.

We are proud that Weschler's has long been trusted by clients of note. Over the years, we have been privileged to handle the property from many prominent local estates such as those of Katherine Graham, the Honorable and Mrs. William McChesney Martin, Jr., Ella Poe Burling, Marshall Coyne, Mary Marvin Breckinridge Patterson, Ambassador and Mrs. Philip Bonsal, Lawrence Lomax, as well as furnishings from the Barney Studio House.

Weschler's attracts buyers from across the US, internationally, as well as clients throughout the region. Our buyers––collectors, designers, dealers and curators––are numerous and loyal and lead to excellent sale outcomes. We welcome those interested in consigning and buying both in Washington, and also across the US, and around the world.

Weschler's services are practiced on a bedrock of ethics and principles
Weschler's provides written appraisals for estate tax and estate planning, insurance, charitable contributions and other purposes. You can be assured our professional appraisals comply with all standards and codes of ethics of the American Society of Appraisers and the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

The fourth and fifth generations of the Weschler family continue to uphold the principles on which Adam Weschler founded his company––that the client's interests should remain paramount above all others. To ensure this, Adam Weschler resolved that the company would neither buy nor own any of the items it sold at auction. We maintain this same policy today and act solely as a representative for the consignor.
