Description

• Sam Haile (1909-1948) Giffre at Morillon, Haute Savoie signed and dated Haile 1939 bottom right, further signed, inscribed and dated 1939 on the reverse watercolour 49.5 x 60cm, unframed Provenance: Marianne De Trey Sam (TS) Haile; Potter and Painter. Studied at The Royal College of Art and showed an early interest in Surrealism and in innovative artists like Picasso, Klee and Henry Moore. Haile met the potter Marianne De Trey and they married in 1938. Night time was reserved for the interpretation of dreams and Surrealist painting and the days for making and teaching pottery. He made a number of visits to the French Alps with Marianne and there he made a series of watercolours which celebrate the scale and grandeur of the mountains and valleys. Between 1940 up shop at Dartington. Sam was killed in a road accident in 1948.
