• Stuart Armfield (1916-2000) The Flag Wavers of the Palio Di Siena a set of seventeen each signed and inscribed watercolours each 49 x 36cm. (17) Footnote: The Palio Di Siena is a horse race held twice a year on 2 July and 16 August between ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colours, representing ten of the contrada city wards. A magnificent pageant, the Corteo Siorico, precedes the race which attracts visitors worldwide. The pageant includes Alfieri, flag wavers in medieval costume, who represent the seventeen contrade. Not all seventeen contrade can take part on any one occasion and each year the seven who did not take part previously, plus three others drawn by lots, compete.
