Item Overview

Description

- LA FARGUE, Paulus Constantijn (Dutch 1728 - 1782). View of the Binnenhof with the Ridderzaal; View of the Groenmarkt, c. 1770. A set of two paintings: oil on oak panels, the Binnenhof, signed 'Paulus Constantijn La Fargue pinx' (lower right), and the Groenmarkt, signed 'Paulus, Constantijn La Fargue pinx' (lower right, partly under the frame); framed. From the collection of the Princes of Rostov, Kossatkine-Rostovsky (both paintings with their wax seals (3) on the reverse of the panels) and from the Unicorno collection of Saam and Lily Nijstad (with label 'Eigendom Mevrouw L. Nijstad-Einhorn' (on the reverse of the frame of the View of the Binnenhof)). Professionally cleaned and revarnished, edges sl. rubbed by the frames, some very fine craquelure (mainly vertical), the works are overall in good condition, the Binnenhof: minor greyish traces of old retouch (mainly upper centre), tiny brown spot on the surface (upper right); the Groenmarkt: minor greyish traces of old retouch (mainly along the upper edge), some tiny chips to the edges (NB Images in the 2011 Sotheby's sale cropped, condition unchanged since they left the Nijstads!).

Provenance

Private collection; Sotheby's, London, 2011; Unicorno Collection of Saam and Lily Nijstad, before 1991; Princes Kossatkine-Rostovsky, Russia

Notes

"The taste of the unicorn. A good provenance is not supposed to add to the value of a work of art, but it does. The information that an object was once owned by someone with famous good taste is worth money on the auction block. A collection mainly of Dutch 18th-century drawings that partakes of this quality [...] is the Unicorno Collection, accumulated over the past 50 years by Saam and Lily Nijstad. The nicest kind of added worth a provenance can offer to a work of art is the occurrence, in the list of previous owners, of collectors with outstanding taste [...] “The Unicorno collection: 55 years of collecting European drawings.” [...]. The collection is the joint property of a husband and wife, Saam and Lily Nijstad. (The collection takes its name from Lily’s maiden name, Einhorn). Saam Nijstad is a distinguished dealer in paintings, a member of one of the dynasties of Jewish dealers in antiques, books and art that emerged from the east of the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries" (Gary Schwartz in his blog on the Sotheby's sale of the drawings in 2004 (http://bit.do/eAZ6U)). When asked about the La Fargues he wrote us: "Dat de schitterende La Fargues aan Saam en Lily Nijstad toebehoorden voegt m.i. zeker toe aan hun interesse en waarde. Zij handelden niet in zomaar elk kunstwerk op de markt, dus is een herkomst uit kunsthandel S. Nystad al een aanbeveling. Dat Saam en Lily deze schilderijen voor henzelf behielden, zegt des te meer. [...]. Succes ermee, ik wou maar dat ik bieden kon". NB A reduced buyer's premium of 10% including tax is applicable to winning bids exceeding € 100,000 (please see terms and conditions).
