Item Overview

Description

These four volumes of Jonathan Couch’s A History of the Fishes of the British Islands feature 252 handsome hand-colored wood block engravings. The work was published in London by Groombridge & Sons in 1877.

Johnathan Couch drew all of the fish for this work from nature. Couch paid great attention to drawing and coloring the fish accurately. He kept the fish submersed in water to retain their natural color. Alex F. Lydon prepared the woodblocks from Couch’s drawings, and Benjamin Fawcett printed the plates for the work
