Item Overview

Description

A BRILLIANT BLUE AND WHITE 'LOTUS' MALLET VASE

Xuande mark, Kangxi

Painted in a deep violet-blue cobalt with scrolling stylized lotus and composite flowerheads and leafy tendrils that wrap around the body and continue over the rounded shoulders and halfway up the cylindrical neck to a single molded bow-string band below upright plantain-leaf lappets and a plain, slightly flaring rim, an encircled
Xuande six-character mark to the base.

9 7/8in (25.1cm) high

Condition Report

A small glaze bubble imperfection to the shoulder (0.3cm) but fairly insignificant. An original kiln firing line or natural fold-line to the unglazed foot ring but unobtrusive. Superbly painted and a wonderful shape with bright violet cobalt tones. Highly recommended.

This elegant mallet shape is a fairly rare form in the Chinese potter's oeuvre. Another Kangxi-period mallet-form blue and white vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, painted with two stylized phoenixes rather than the composite flowerheads of this example, is illustrated in
Qingdai yuyao ciqi, vol. I, part II, Beijing, 2005, pp. 102-3, no. 40.
