Notes

This picture is after the oil entitled The Gentle Music of a Byegone Day by J.M. Strudwick. Now in the collection of Lord Lloyd Webber, Strudwick's painting was exhibited at the New Gallery in 1890. It was also included in the recent show, Pre-Raphaelite and Other Masters: The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection (London, Royal Academy, September - December 2003, no. 88).

Little is known of the copyist, Lalli, although two comparable works on ivorine by the same hand, Dante's Dream at the Time of the Death of Beatrice after D.G. Rossetti and Why Seek ye the Living among the Dead after J.R. Spencer Stanhope, were sold at Christie's London on 3 June 1994 (lots 161 and 162 respectively).

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis
