Notes

Other casts of the same model are in the Vejen Museum in Vejen, Denmark and in Den Hirschsprungske Samling, Copenhagen (inv. nr. 671). Various other museums in Denmark own work by Bonnesen, amongst which the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen which has the groups Adam og Eva ved Abels lig, To løover and Manden, som binder bjøornen, the statue En jysk tyr and the large group Fra Hunnernes Tid. En hunner og en kinesisk pige til hest in its collection.

Carl J. Bonnesen (1868-1933) was a Danish sculptor whose production is big and versatile. With his fertile imagination and craftsmanship, he created a series of works with which he almost seems to defy the static creature of sculpture. There is vigorous movement and bold composition. His expression was naturalistic, characterized by imagination, insight and originality. The monumental sculpture group Thor i kamp med jtterne (Thor in battle with giants) and the groups Døoden og Amor (Death and Cupid) and En rasende (A raging) are typical examples of Bonnesen's interest in movement and interaction between people and animals.
