Item Overview

Description

Middelburg, 1759, the maker's mark overstruck and indistinct, also struck with later Dutch duty mark of 1906-1953 Shaped oblong with moulded borders, the flat-topped raised cover with central panel applied with scroll and foliage ornament between two scroll and foliate cartouches containing punched star ornament, the base with similar cartouches flanking a central engraved star in a circle, marked on rim 12 cm. (43/4 in.) long 174 gr. (5 oz.) PROVENANCE With E. Aardewerk & Zn., The Hague, 1968, acquired by Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. G-48). NOTES A very similar tobacco-box by Philippus Jacobus Kops, Middelburg, 1755, is recorded in J.W. Frederiks, Dutch Silver, vol. III, The Hague, 1960, p. 10, no. 24, plate 18. The maker's mark on the present box appears to be overstruck by a second town mark and may possibly be that of Kops.
