Item Overview

Description

A fine Worcester decorated Limoges Enamels plaque by Thomas Bott, painted with angels and an infant on an intense blue ground, 25 x 21cm, signed, dated 1864 and inscribed with the title Protecting Angels on the reverse Thomas Bott (1829-1870) was born in Kidderminster and worked firstly at the nearby Stourbridge glass works of WH, B & J Richardson, where his talent was first noticed. He introduced painting in the manner of French 16th century Limoges Enamels but in an unmistakable modern style. He did much to raise the reputation of the Worcester factory during the Kerr & Binns and early Royal periods and his work sold at the time for very high prices. The painstaking technique and his early death meant that his output was small. His son, Thomas John Bott (see lot 271) worked in his father's style. See Sandon (H), Royal Worcester Porcelain from 1862 to the Present Day, 1973, p84 and col plt III. In fine condition, no damage wear or restoration
