Description

A floor standing regulator clock by James Murray, circa 1850
having a brass inlaid mahogany case, the stepped caddy top hood over ripple moulding and with canted corners, the trunk with canted corners centred by a glazed door revealing the pendulum, the lower section of the trunk with applied mouldings, supported on a plinth base, the 30cm (12") circular silver brass dial with blued steel pointers, concentric minute hand enclosing large subsidiaries for running seconds with observatory marks and Roman Hours below, inscribed to the dial 'James Murray Royal Exchange' and to the subsidiary dial 'London and Melbourne' the weight driven five pillar movement with rectangular plates, high count pinions, sealed with brass dust plates, the dead beat escapement with Harrisons maintaining power, cylindrical bob pendulum

OTHER NOTES
This regulator was the shop regulator of Willis & Sons, Melbourne who eventually became Australia's largest manufacturing jewellers. It is highly likely that the Willis family purchased the regulator from the Melbourne branch of James Murray upon James Murray Jr closing the business.
