Item Overview

Description

A FRENCH EMPIRE PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON, ATTRIBUTED TO ANTHELME-FRANCOIS LAGRENEE (1774-1832), CIRCA 1815, wearing the uniform of the chasseurs-a-cheval with red collar and sash, the cross and the 'Grand Aigle' of the Legion d'honneur and the iron Crown of Lombardy, in a probably contemporary engine-turned gilt-metal rectangular frame 9.5cm high excluding suspension ring, oval 6.5cm high. This representation of the Emperor is a variation of a version evolved by the miniaturist Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Augustin and often used by him as well as Jean-Baptiste Isabey and other contemporaries. For versions by Augustin and Isabey see the Wallace Collection, M8/M9 and M209.
