Franz Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff (1816-1887) began his education at the age of fourteen at the iron foundry in Berlin and at the age of 16 he moved on to the royal Gewerbe-Institut. Later he studied under Soyer in his foundry in Paris. As a result of his preference to create animal sculptures he gained the nickname "Tier-Wolff". Several of his sculptures are now still on display in public places of which the Sterbende Löwin for the Berliner Tiergarten is well-known.
