The following six lots were acquired directly from the modernist artist-jeweller, Ed Wiener (1918-1991). Weiner began his career during the early days of the Abstract Expressionist movement in America and cited Joan Miro and Alexander Calder among others as a major influence on his early work. He opened his first shop in Provincetown, Mass. in 1946. After relocating to New York City and establishing studios in Greenwich Village and later Manhatten, Wiener maintained a summer gallery in Provincetown until 1965. Wiener worked largely in silver until the late 1950's when he began designing jewels set with precious stones and mounted in yellow gold. His later work is almost Byzantine in style having been influenced by his study of medieval Western art and observations of traditional stone cutting techniques in India. In 1988, the Fifty/50 Gallery in New York mounted a retrospective of his work.
