This vase would have originally formed part of a five-piece garniture set, comprised of three oviform or baluster vases and covers and two slender beaker vases. They were highly desirable among the aristocracy of Europe and Great Britain and would have been placed atop the stone or wood mantle that surrounded the fireplaces in the great halls or entrances of these grand houses. See a related pair of blue and jars, but without covers, Kangxi period, illustrated in
Porzellan aus China und Japan, Berlin, 1990, p.403, nos.192a and 192b.

For a very similarly shaped jar and cover with identically shaped panels to the sides, see Sotheby's New York, 18 September 1996, lot 199, from a private St. Louis Collection.

See also a complete garniture of this date that was sold at Bonhams London, 14 May 2009, Lot 95; and a similar blue and white jar and cover, sold at Bonhams Skinner Boston, 27 March 2023, lot 39.
