Chambard studied at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1836 under Ingres and David d'Angers. Winning the Prix de Rome in 1837 he exhibited at the Salons between 1841 and 1868. The present figure of Le Bucheron is his most celebrated work and was cast in an edition: reductions of 88 cm. high appear with some frequency, however the present life-size bronze is exceedingly rare.
