Provenance

Probably Karl Eduard von Liphart (1808-1891), and by descent to his grandson Freiherr Reinhold von Liphart (fl. 1890-1920) (L. 1758), probably with his number '1349'. Curt Otto (circa 1880-1929); C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, 7 November 1929, lot 94 (as 'Jan Martsen de Jonge'); where purchased by I.Q. van Regteren Altena for 21.39 guilders (Inventory book: '795. t. J. Martens de jonge? schutter').

Notes

Little is known of Martens's activity as a draughtsman. He was a pupil of Karel van Mander (1548-1606) and was particularly known for his landscapes, which featured military and hunting motifs. The present drawing probably dates from the end of his career.
