Description

Italian, probably Pisa, mid 14th century On an integrally carved circular plinth. Some damages; Virgin's head detached and Christ child lacking. 211/4 in. (54 cm.) high NOTES This marble figure follows in the tradition of late gothic sculptors such as Nicola Pisano (active 1258-1278) and Giovanni di Balduccio (active 1317-1349). The Arca of St Augustine in Pavia, tentatively attributed by Pope-Hennessy to the latter sculptor (see J. Pope-Hennessy, Italian Gothic Sculpture, London, 1955, pp. 200-201, pl. 58, fig. 75), includes a number of figures which are comparable to the present lot.
