Item Overview

Description

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF MARIAN AND MICHAEL SABEE

height 10 5/8 in. (27cm)

modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler, raised on an oval base encrusted with colorful flowers and leaves, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue. Firing cracks to base, horse's forelegs and ears restored.

PROVENANCE

Sold, Sotheby's, London, June 4, 1974, lot 242

NOTE

Carl Albiker, Die Meissner Porzellantiere, illustrates four examples of this model, figs. 428-431, and links the modelling of the group to an entry in Kändler's work records of 1765. That the model was created at this late date seems unlikely. A 'Mohr mit Pferd' is mentioned in the 1753 entry of Count von Bruhl's Konditorei, and the model also appears to have been the inspiration for the almost identical groups produced at Longton Hall in England circa 1760.
