Lot 12: A rare Battersea enamel bottle ticket, circa 1753-56

Engraved by Simon Francis Ravenet after a design by James Gwin, printed in brownish black and lightly overpainted in colours with a naked black boy with one arm around the neck of a tiger, feeding him grapes, a sailing ship in the distance, titled 'CAPE', 7.2cm wide (fine cracks, small patches of restoration)

A similar example is illustrated by Susan Benjamin, English Enamel Boxes (1978), p 39. Another example with the cat painted as a leopard was sold in these rooms on 8 June 2005, lot 78. The design does not appear to have been used in conjunction with any other label
