Description

[MAP-LONG ISLAND SOUND]

BLUNT, EDMUND. Long Island Sound from New York to Montock Point, Surveyed in the Years 1828, 29 & 30 by Edmund Blunt. New York: Published & sold by E. & G.W. Blunt, 28 April, 1830. Large engraved navigational chart on three joined sheets, blue paper backed at an early date. Engraved by William Hooker. Overall about 21 1/2 x 80 inches (54.5 x 203 cm); rolled. A few tears approaching title and few small chips to edges, small gouge in blank space in land area at upper right, some through of adhesive where joined, toned and with a few spots but well preserved overall given its size.

A fantastic and rare navigational chart reaching from the Montauk and Watch Hill Point at East to the Hudson. The major land points are named but generally not delineated excepting a few major roads in Manhattan and layouts of Stratford, Bridgeport, New Haven and Sag Harbor. A few lighthouses are indicated with red dots including the one at Montauk. The map is scarce with few examples in the auction record.
