The attribution to Swanevelt was confirmed by Dr Anne Charlotte Steland in a communication dated 19 February 2006. She will include the drawing in her forthcoming catalogue of Swanevelt's drawings. The handling of the wash can be compared to a drawing in the Courtauld Collection (D. Farr and W. Bradford, The Northern Landscape, exhib. cat., New York, The Drawing Center, and London, The Courtauld Institute Galleries, 1986, no. 63), while the strongly Italianate feeling of the penwork is also found in a landscape in the Print Room at the University of Leiden (J. Bolten, Alte Zeichnungen aus dem Kupferstichkabinett der Universität zu Leiden, exhib. cat., Saarbrücken, Saarlandmuseum, 1986-87, no. 83).
