The flat cylindrical cover painted in rich blue tones with a scene from
Xixiang Ji (
Romance of the Western Chamber) with figures on a terrace before a pavilion entrance, the narrow sides of the box and cover with landscape scenes, the flat base with a bat at the center.


3 1/8in (7.9cm) diam

Some interior glaze imperfections, including a kiln surface glaze line that runs about a third of the way around the sides of the base interior. Some minute air bubble pinpricks but unobtrusive.

The cover depicts a narrative from Scene 8, Book 2 of
Xixiang Ji (
Romance of the Western Chamber). Here, student Zhang has given the fighting monk, Huiming, a letter asking General Du Que for help against the rebellious troops. Here, Zhang stands behind the abbot with the fly whisk.
