vi, [2], 305 pp. Illustrated with 6 lithographed plates, with tissue-guards; modern facsimile of the folding map of the San Francisco Bay Area. 7 1/2 x4 1/2, original blind-stamped dark brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition.

Early and important observations of California during the Gold Rush and the period preceding it. The Zamorano 80 notes that "Lieutenant Revere was a graduate of Annapolis and a grandson of Paul Revere. His Tour of Duty is one of the outstanding authorities on the period of the Conquest, and his descriptions of California and the gold regions are of the best. The book contains valuable chapters on land law and land titles, as well as the complete report of Col. Mason on the gold fields." Streeter says that "this is one of the most important books on the Gold Rush and figures on most selected lists." Spine leaning a bit, ends bumped and rebacked, corners showing, light soiling and shelf wear; lacks the free endpapers, pp. 301-305 replaced with modern photocopies on thick stock paper, middle two signatures off-centered, mild foxing, small piece of original map still present; still a good copy - sold as is.
