Notes

The top section of this back plate is the same as that of the grate in the Winter Smoking Room at Cardiff Castle, although the pillars are formed as mitres. Cardiff Castle is one of William Burges's most notable commissions for John-Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquis of Bute. Hart Son and Peard catalogue, p.199, Section 6 - Domestic Furniture, Pillar and Dog Grates, a similar grate is illustrated as no 550, next to 529, a dog grate designed by William Burges and used in his own home, Tower House in London.
