trefoil upward lip with moulded border, gilt interior, panelled handle with upper bifurcated junction, cone terminals, lower bifurcated junction above a palmette motif, engraved with a coat of arms, incuse stamped to underside "Wimbush & Hyde Goldsmiths to the King London", height 30cm, weight 45.5oz.

The 5th century BC Etruscan beaked oinochoe is found in both terracotta and bronze. Bronze examples with exactly the same acorn and anthemion decoration as the present lot are known, for a further example in the British Museum, see cat 88 in Ellen Macnamara 'The Etruscans' (London 1990).

The quartered shield of ROWLEY ensigned by a coronet and supported by allegorical figures representing Pallas and Temperance for BARON LANGFORD of Summerhill, co. Meath.
