NOTE

Many of De Verwer's coastal scenes seem to be imaginary, but others depict real views. The latter include an important group of topographical views along the coasts of France, Flanders and the Netherlands, in the British Museum (see A. M. Hind, Catalogue of Drawings by Dutch and Flemish Artists...in the British Museum, vol. IV, London 1931, pp. 89-90, plate LIII). The present drawing, though more freely executed than those in the British Museum, surely also represents a real view, probably a village in the dunes of Holland. In technique and format, this drawing is extremely typical of De Verwer's work.
