Description

Adam Ferdinand Tietz (Dietz) (1708-1777)
A PAIR OF BOZZETTO. Germany, Würzburg, around 1765. Two unique delicately shaped and elegantly stylized allegorical groups of two female figures dressed in decorative costumes of that time: Music and Arithmetic from a collection of liberal arts. Lime wood, original polychromy, richly gilt; groups are set in decorative rococo plinths. Allegory of Music comprises of a woman playing the flute (the instrument missing) while the other is sitting and reading (singing) from music part. Arithmetic also comprises of a standing figure dressed in a short coat and a hat who is teaching a woman sitting and holding a board with numbers. Both models are parts of stone sculptures of monumental Parnass group from summer episcopal residence in Veitshöchheim, which was created by Tietz's wookshop for bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim from Würzburg. These designs differ from final realisations in some interesting details, for example in turns of figures' heads. H. 33 cm and 32 cm. Condition corresponding to age. Tiny chips of the finest parts (fingers, flowers, attributes), minor cracks and grazes in the polychromy.
Adam Ferdinand Tietz (Dietz) - important Czech-German sculptor of rococo style, born in Holešovice near Jezeří, son of the Czech sculptor of Lobkowitz courtyard Jan Adam Dietz, active at Jezeří domain, brother of sculptor Jan Josef Dietz. He studied and worked in a family workroom in Jezeří until 1735. Later he undertook a journeyman's travel during which he stayed in Vienna for some time. He worked for Elector of Würzburg from 1736, Elector of Bamberg from 1747 as well as Elector of Trier from 1754. He returned to Bamberk in 1760 to work for bishop A. F. von Seinsheim, to whom he embellished local residence as well as summer residence in Seehof and Veitshöchheim where he worked from the beginning of 1770s. Thanks to this important contract, he was appointed a sculptor of Würzburg courtyard by the bishop in 1767. In connection with many contracts which he must have coped with, the Czech relatives arrived there, including Jan Václav Grauer, the follower of his father's workshop. Lit.: Sotheby`s. Adam Ferdinand Tietz (Dietz) (1708-1777)
Aritmetika sestává rovněž z postavy stojící, oděné v krátkém pláštíku a klobouku, jež vyučuje ženu sedící a držící destičku s číslicemi. V. 33 cm a 32 cm. Stav odpovídající stáří. Drobné úlomky nejjemnějších částí (prsty, květy, atributy), jemné praskliny a oděrky v polychromii.
Na aukci Sotheby's Londýn (6. 7. 1995) byla položka vydražena za 48 000 £.
